Thanks!** A: These will keep the legs from getting wet that is if the water is no higher than 1/2 an inch, but if it's just that the floor gets wet there is no problem. The felt pad has a small hole but the silicone does not have a hole. **Q: What a the purpose of the metal insert?** A: These protectors are identical to the ones I purchased a couple of years ago. The difference in this version is the metal insert. My protectors have a flexable insert that is attached to the bottom felt. They are not removable. As near as I can tell, the metal insert replaces the original design to provide a stronger fitting for the felt. I have not had any problems except a couple of them came off. I just slipped them back on. I do not have a lot of weight (just dining room chairs) so they have shown no wear so far. If you load on the units is high, using the ones with the metal is a good idea. Otherwise you can probably use either version. **Q: Does anyone make these in a 1"x1" sizes?** A: Amazon. I bought them here. The silicone is flexible in the sense that you can pry it open if the leg is wider but it grips well thus will not fall off.
