I need this to mount vertically with the load coming in at a low diagonal direction. How strong will this be (providing my installation is solid)?

It will depend on the load amount and the angle of the load, as this unit is only a 3/8" ungraded steel bolt. From your question, it looks like you are trying to use it more in the "shear" direction of the unit, not the pull. I would say that your load rating would be reduced to 25% of the working load of 800 pounds.
