Will this work in place of greensand plus?

Greensand plus is typically used when there is insufficient flow to adequately backwash birm. If you have 11 to 13 gallons per minute for 15 minutes and another 10 for backwash you can use birm. May need to change orfice on backwash line

Will this work in tannin system

Birm is not designed for tannin removal.

Is this a good replacement media for the Iron Zapper iron filter?

The Birm Filter media is very effective in removing Iron from my Well Water and I would not refer to it as a short term Iron Zapper. On average ( with Backwashing ) I would say you can expect a good 5yrs of service and more ( up to 10 - 15yrs if you purge the system with a liquid Iron remover to loosen the accumulated muck from the Well covering the Birm and preventing it from neutralizing more Iron)

Is this used in place of resin for a softener, or is this axtually resin?

No, this is not used in place of any other softener (Birm is NOT a softener). Birm is an iron remover (or what is called an iron removing media). Resin is a term used to describe the build-up (residue deposits) in your system that accumulates over time and clogs it up. Backwashing of your system is the means of removing the accumulated resin.
