It has a ultra violet light and charcoal filter.

what is the purpose of the sponge?

There are two filters one goes around the motor and one the white one is where the water goes back down into the bowl after the pup or kitty has been drinking and catches the dirt from the top of the bowl or anything else that lands in the water from the air around it.. I rinse it off regularly so I don’t have to change it as often it can get slimy I also use spring water because my tap water isn’t the best and can cause stones in my dog he’s fighting them now in his bladder and kidneys the crystals aren’t flushing through and he’s loaded again which is the reason for the water bowl it actually has him drinking more water
