Why don't you use colorfast dye that won't bleed onto skin or other clothing?  After careful washing and over three dozen rinses, color still bleeds.

Keffiyeh were originally designed and woven in the Levant, primarily in Palestine. It was a practical scarf for all seasons - against sand, dust, sun in summer and cold winters (yes, such topographies, especially near large water ways get very cold at night! Every few year it can snow as well.). My first time living in Gaza, I figured it was how all winter - big mistake.

Decorative items were usually in blankets and tapestries or kilim (2 sided). They are hand made and very costly asits a slow and dying art form.  Kuffiyahs though became sdopted as a fashion item with little knowledge. In Palestine, perhaps around 40-50 years ago, the colors id'd the wearer: green/white for far right muslims (IJ and Hamas), red/white for communist/socialists (PFLP, DFLP, FFLP-GC) and black/white for secular and Christians. Other colors are for fashion.

The only handmade ones still produced, and I have one, is at a small shop in Hebron, south of Bethlehem- all others from anywhere else (China, India) are machine made.
