Image Transfer Workshop: Mixed-Media Techniques for Successful Transfers

THE Manual for Successful Transfers - Many Methods
Wow. WOW.Transfers are a tricky lot. Transfers can be frustrating. One method can produce a perfect transfer once...then never seem to work again. Failed transfers have resulted in many of my pieces being trashed. Even though they are temperamental - and seem to be for everyone - Darlene Olivia McElroy and Sandra Duran Wilson have broken the mold and tamed the wicked ways of transfers. Or at least explained how to make them behave for artists. With all the problems one encounters while attempting transfers, it's amazing more artists just don't give up. I personally know of many who have. Enter the authors of this book...and your success rate could dramatically rise. Into the stratosphere. You can easily go from hating transfers and not using them - at all...ever - to using them on everything standing still. This book makes that much of a difference. There are tons of methods depicted. An example of each method is demonstrated in a piece by one of the talented authors. My favorite part? The "Troubleshooting" section. Even with the excellent guidance of these Transfer Divas, you will have transfers go awry. Why? They will explain possible reasons - and then give you solutions! (Can you hear the trumpets sounding?) These gals lay out the necessary supplies, give explicit directions, do incredible step outs, tell you the archival quality of each method, troubleshoot problems, and give you ideas on recommended substrates. What more could you want...seriously??The Transfer Divas (which is what I've renamed these ladies) even have a section in the back about where to purchase supplies. Schwing! The instructions are simple and doable - and it's exciting to know transfers are actually possible. Whether you have success or need help, the Transfer Divas have a great website set up - and they are accessible. I had a question about one of the products, so I emailed Darlene. She responded with the answer - in just a few hours. Yay!In case you can't tell, I love this book. I'm excited that transfers are possible. I'm thrilled the directions are easily laid out. I'm enthralled the Transfer Divas took the time to test so many methods, laid them out so clearly, and wrote such an all-around fantastic book. If you find transfers appealing, you must get your hands on this book. Several of the methods use things you most likely already have in your studio - and if you don't, they are easily acquired. I think the most expensive item they use is Yupo paper - and even that isn't horribly expensive.Transfers lend a great extension to any art piece - having this book will give you options for many methods, and increase your success rate astronomically. Love the Transfer Divas - love the book!!

Great Examples of Image Transferring
Lots of excellent examples of how to do image transferring into a mixed-media painting. I have looked over the many examples but have not done any of them. I will have to make a list of material and see what I have in our studio and go out and buy what we don't have. I took an digital image class by Golden and University Art store a few months ago. They gave me the supplies and I bought some more supplies. I made a few simple paintings in the class. I will have to come up with a plan to design some of my own and then try it again.

Very interesting, very well explained, cool info
I bought this book by curiosity, because I wanted to know more about transfer techniques, though I already have many books on the subject, and I already made transfers many times myself. But since the reviews were rather good, I thought it would be interesting for me to read this book. And I am not disappointed at all. It is really very well explained, they give information I saw nowhere else and some of them are rather original, according to me. I am an arts and crafts teacher myself, and I already wrote a book about arts and crafts in France, so it is rather difficult to surprise me, but I must admit this book is very complete about all the transfer techniques. The only thing I didn't find so far, and maybe I didn't search well, is the basic technique where you use the simple photo transfer paper with your printer. But no need of a book for that, you just have to follow the instructions on the package of the paper. No, here, you will rather find techniques which make you use products you already have in your studio or in your kitchen.Everything is clear, so it is easy to understand, for beginners as well as for people who already know what they are doing.Beside the convincing content, the images are beautiful. You don't need to have the exact same style as what is shown here, but it is pleasant to look at these images, in the same time, learning something interesting and having fun.So, I recommend this book if you want to know different transfer techniques. And no matter what kind of printer you use, the authors will tell you every time with which kind of printer it works.I would even say, if you want to only have 1 book about the transfer techniques, this is the one.

Some problems with page 15 transfer method, but.....
I can't get the method on page 15 of this book to work. But I was just now contacted back by one of the authors, Sandra Duran Wilson, who is a very helpful and nice person. There can be a lot of hiccups with the transfer method on page 15 but a lot of details and reasons why were not there in the book. For me, the more warnings and advice the better ! But I can at least say that Sandra wrote back to me same day and answered questions that the other author must have been too busy at the time to answer {I sent my question to the other co-author, but Sandra was the one who answered as it was forwarded to her}. Sandra did say that the method on page 15 was not the easiest one and not her own preference. I just wish they had explained all of what could go wrong, why it might not work and what else you can try to see if you can make it work {as I found out in Sandra's helpful letter}. I will post the advice that Sandra gave so it can help anyone else with this problem, but I will need a few days to get back here and do that---Also, I started this review before I tried most of the methods in the entire book. But boy was I fried when page 15 did not work, because how disappointing is that ? It should work if its in the book. But I will be back to review and edit this further. Sandra gave some advice in an email and I will try that to see how it goes, {she gave trouble-shooting info that was not really in the book}.All the same it appears to be a nice book, and I'm sure the other transfer methods will work.

Image Transfer
Spannende Vorschläge. Leider hatte ich Schwierigkeiten, die entsprechenden Materialien zu finden. Das fühlte sich dann an, als würde mir der Speck durch die Nase gezogen. Hmm. Nun ja.

Image Transfer Workshop
This book is inspiring, as soon as you open it, you want to create. There are lots of exciting techniques that will stretch your creative expression. Just think of the images sitting on your computer of people or places that you love. The techniques in this book will help you transfer those into your art work.Just think of the pictures, home decor and gifts you could create. Check out the website by the author as listed in the book as there are some video demonstrations of some of the processes shown in the book.A great way to explore more surfaces and how to transfer your favorite images to them. Highly recommend it to you all.

Excellent Resource
I've had a chance to read through this book and it has gotten me very excited about playing with image transfers again. There are a wide variety of techniques demonstrated. From simple projects you can start right, away even if you don't have many art materials at home, to the more involved projects that may require the collection of materials first. The instructions are easy to follow and are filled with excellent photographs of each step. Projects start with a breakdown that helps prepare for each project. And each project ends with a troubleshooting section where the authors discuss what to watch out for.One of my favorite features is the materials listing for each technique. Besides helping me create a shopping list it also lets me easily pick projects I can start right away with materials I have on hand. For those interested in creating Artist Trading Cards and larger projects this book is definitely for you!Beautiful layoutFantastic photographsOutstanding instructionHighly recommended!

Great book with many ideas and techniques- a great resource for the mixed media artist
Loved this book, especially since I am a self-taught artist. This is my only resource as no live course offerings in my area so this book will become a technique bible for me.
