Denon AH-D7200 Over-Ear Hi-Res Headphones, Premium Hi-Fi Sound with 50mm FreeEdge Drivers and Walnut Housing

After reading stellar reviews from pros and consumers, I decided to buy these very handsome headphones. I must say that these sounded very good from the box. Of course some attributes were improved on after about a month of listening. I have found that certain music such as orchestral, chamber music and piano as well as acoustic jazz and folk benefit from these headphones. However, EDM (yes, I'm guilty), pop and hard rock are lacking some bass presence. Also, vocals seem to sound a bit recessed in the mix. However lieder, jazz vocals and opera sound just fine. The fit is best for a smaller head, although don't let that deter from auditioning these 'phones. They stay on quite nicely if you dance around a bit (yes I'm also guilty). The cord is robust, however it's a bit microphonic. And the overall real estate on your head is gonna be big. Denon also makes a flagship model with bamboo wood. I wonder what they sound like...

These are well built. Unlike other reviewers, these fit my head comfortably enough. I tested these side by side with the Dan Clark Aeon Flow 2 Closed Back. These were clearly fuller sounding and more immersive. I will admit that along with other reviewers the high end was not as bright as my KEF LS-50 Metas but I might be able to live with that. I might try another option in this price range but these are a possible keeper for me. Happy to get any recommendations. Update: I was able to find a Denon AH-D9200 model (short supply everywhere). They solve the brightness issue with great breadth and depth across the spectrum. Pricier but I plan to use them for many years and prefer them. Build is equivalent but sound is a clear notch above.

Overall, I think these are good headphones. I've learned over the few years as I've been getting into the headphone hustle that it's incredibly difficult to find a perfect headphone...the elusive "end-game"! To that end, these headphones aren't perfect, but they're a great choice if you're looking for a fun, relaxed sound that still has audiophile clarity and resolution. However, you may have to do some pad rolling, and the headband isn't for everyone. I decided to look at these headphones because I was in the market for a fun-sounding pair of headphones that had a u-shaped frequency response; I wanted to enjoy clear trebles in the presence of strong, impactful bass, but without sacrificing on the mids too much. I also wanted them to be well-built and comfortable. These headphones get me as close as I've managed to get to completing the quest! As part of this search, I've tried the Klipsch HP-3 (they sounded amazing, but the headband was way too loose for my head and it kept feeling like they wanted to off my head) and the Fostex TR-X00 Mahogany (these also sounded great, but the mids were a bit too recessed and the built quality is not great). Out of the box, the AH-D7200 sounded muddy and the bass was too overwhelming to me. This was despite burning in the headphones for about 50 hours. I decided to do some pad rolling with ZMF pads, and so I tried out the Universe lambskin, suede, and perforated lambskin pads. In that order, I found #1 sounded largely the same as the stock pads, #2 had just slightly too much bass and just not quite enough treble, and #3 had perfect bass but the treble was too bright. So, I've settled on the ZMF Universe suedes for now; as I listen to them more, I'm finding that I'm happy with this sound! I might eventually fiddle around with using some Dekoni attenuation rings (although the rings are sized for bigger pads, so I'll have to take some scissors to them), but at this point I'm happy. I'm not sure if it's appropriate, but I'd also call these headphones bass cannons; they seem to really show off for genres like hip hop, rap, and rock. Between these and the TR-X00, I prefer the better build quality of the Denon and substantially better resolution of the mids and trebles. I'm not sure why others haven't commented about the overwhelming bass with the stock pads. I just found that it overwhelmed everything else, and pad rolling was the only thing that tamed it down. The only thing that I don't like about the headphones is the headband. The leather is nice and it feels very cushioned, but the foam they use has bumps on it on the inside (hopefully you can see them in the picture), and those bumps (3 of them, by my count) press firmly on my head and I find that pressure pretty annoying. You eventually adjust to it, but it never feels great. I ordered a wool headband cover from AliExpress (similar ones can also be found on Amazon) that helps alleviate the discomfort a bit, but it's still not enough; the pressure of the headband starts overwhelming the experience of the headphones. It probably doesn't help that I have a fairly oval/narrow head, but still, I don't get why you'd put that pattern into the foam in the first place; it's an aspect of the design that can clearly be improved. In the end, the headband was too uncomfortable for me, and I've decided to sell them.

Headphone enthusiasts like myself (or canheads in nerd speak) remember the mystique around the legendary DENON AH-D5000 and AH-D7000 headphones. I owned the 5000 model for a time, but eventually sold them to make way for newer and better balanced headphones appearing on the market. The original models sounded fine but (and this is the slow kiss of death for me) the mids were recessed in relation to the other frequencies. Well folks, I'm delighted to report that the AH-D7200 resolve that issue and then some. These are brilliant headphones. The sound is balanced, the mids are slightly forward but not noticeably so... they're perfect. Oh, and as a bonus, they're much more comfortable than their predecessors.

These headphones sound great for my old ears (60+). Using with the fantastic Marantz HD-CD1 CD player. I'm using quality cds (20 bit or remastered or DDD), but not SACDs. Clarity is fabulous. Separation is great too. Comfortable for long listing periods. Look nice too. Worth the money.

Uhm I love them, love the vocals, bass, sub-bass and trebles. Very pleasing to listen to for hours, they're warm, relaxing. I love the fact I can use them in balanced mode, which in my opinion brings out more depth to the music. Definitely my number 1 closed cans. Also love the Hifiman ed. x. Wanted badly try out the bio cellulose fiber that has been used with great success in past, like Sony R10, but where can I get one of those? I've tried the nighthawks, but the design and sound didn't win me completely, so I sold them. These danon are a winner in my opinion. Did I say I love the vocals?

I have had some decent headphones, but decided to upgrade. After reading reviews of dozens of headphones and listening to a few, I decided on these without listening to them first. They sounded amazing from the first time I put them on and have improved with more hours of listening time. Highly recommend.

As some other reviews have noted, the headband is super uncomfortable. The headphones are pretty heavy and the headband doesn't evenly distribute the weight across my head so all the weight is pressing down on a single point at the top of my head. After about 15 minutes of listening, my head becomes too sore and I have to take off the headphones to take a break. This is a pretty tragic design flaw given that these are some really great sounding headphones. Wide soundstage, classic denon warm sound signature, punchy bass that is precise and not boomy.

Wonderful. Musical, fast, engaging. Perfect for electronica/synthpop. I love the bass.

Son fabulosos. Un producto de lujo. Lujo de sonido y lujo de materiales: cuero, madera y aluminio. Se han convertido en mis favoritos absolutos. Tengo unos Sennheiser HD 599 muy cómodos y gran representación para música clásica. El inconveniente es que son totalmente abiertos y el sonido exterior entra y también sale con lo que molestas a quien tengas al lado. Mis otros auriculares favoritos hasta ahora eran unos viejos Denon Ah-D900 de 1988 que siguen sonando muy bien. Mejores bajos y mejor aislamiento que los Sennheiser. Tenia un empate entre los dos, pero se han visto ambos claramente superados por los nuevos Denos. El Denon Ah-D7200 tiene unos bajos prodigiosos y unos agudos aterciopelados, nada estridente. Aislan mejor que unos abiertos aunque no son para exteriores. Son claramente para usar en casa. Eso sí no molestarás a nadie. Mi mujer dice que no oye nada... Además la escena, la localización de los instrumentos es fantástica. En definitiva suenan como unos abiertos de calidad pero con mejores bajos y mejor aislamiento. Yo los uso sobre todo para música clásica pero también suenan muy bien con jazz, rock y pop. Sinceramente creo que son unos auténticos todoterreno. Personalmente me resultan bastante cómodos, no tanto como los Sennheiser que son mucho mas ligeros, pero puedo estar horas con ellos y la sensación con el cuero y demás es muy agradable. Hay gente que tiene problemas de comodidad con la diadema pero no es mi caso. En alguna ocasión presiono un poco la diadema ya que hay un punto de fricción pero se soluciona fácil. Me gustan mucho además por lo fáciles que son de mover. Los he probado con un Iphone XR con el adaptador de Apple y directamente con la salida de auriculares de un Ipad 6, en ambos casos funciona fenomenal. Por supuesto suena aún mejor con un reproductor dedicado. Los uso normalmente con un A&K Sr25 y son una combinación perfecta, suena de escándalo. Por supuesto también fenómeno con mi amplificador Denon estéreo clásico. Relación calidad precio en mi caso absolutamente extraordinaria ya que los compré en Amazon warehouse, mi primera compra. Se indicaba en el anuncio que los auriculares estaban nuevos y la caja dañada, y así fue. No se valorar el precio “normal” pero puedo sin duda afirmar que es un magnifico producto. Mi única critica es que deberían venir también con un cable de 1,2 metros con toma de 3,5 que te tienes que comprar aparte, eso sí son fáciles de encontrar en Amazon.

Für einen Blogbeitrag habe ich den Kopfhörer die letzten Wochen richtig "durchgeackert" und möchte daher hier auch meine ganz persönlichen Feststellungen hierzu mitteilen. Geht es Dir/Ihnen auch manchmal so? Man liest Bewertungen und fragt sich, was die Leute für Vergleiche und “Verirrungen” angetrieben haben mag, erstens den Kauf überhaupt im Vorhinein in Erwägung gezogen zu haben, zum anderen, ob die Inbetriebnahme komplett ohne Zuhilfenahme von alkoholischen Getränken stattgefunden haben mag!? Mir persönlich ging es so, als ich vor einigen Jahren die ersten Testberichte zum Denon AH-D7200 Over Ear Kopfhörer im Internet durchlas. Die Kluft zwischen dem, was man für einen Kopfhörer um die 700 Euro (UVP bei Markteinführung) erwarten darf/muss und dem was sich manche Menschen wünschen, scheint so unterschiedlich zu sein, wie die Frage nach Pils und Kölsch, wie Donald Trump im Verhältnis zu Olaf Scholz usw. 🎧🎧Realistische Herangehensweise🎧🎧 Ich werde hier einmal versuchen den Kopfhörer mit einer etwas realistischeren Marschrichtung zu beschreiben. Wer hier am ende nicht zufrieden sein sollte, kann sich ja immer noch gerne den “vermeintlichen” Klangpropheten zu Füßen legen oder aber was eh immer am besten ist, es einfach selber einmal ausprobieren und dazu eine “fundierte” Meinung bilden! Wer bereits Erfahrungen mit DENON Kopfhörer gemacht hat, weiß sicherlich ganz gut, man sollte sich hier schon ganz sicher sein! 🎧🎧Beginnen wir einmal ganz nüchtern mit den technischen Features des Denon AH-D7200 Over Ear Kopfhörer🎧🎧 Model: AH-D7200 Bauart Kopfhörer (Over-Ear) Prinzip geschlossen Mikrofon nein Schnittstelle Klinkenstecker (6.35mm) Frequenzbereich 5Hz-55kHz Impedanz 25Ω Empfindlichkeit 108dB Treiber 50mm Kabel 300 cm, austauschbar Gewicht 385g Vielleicht hole ich mal etwas weiter aus und gebe erstmal meine Testbedingungen und Erwartungen zum besten … Beim Kauf eines neuen Kopfhörers habe ich persönlich in etwa so eine Vorstellung von dem, was ich mit dem Teil eigentlich anstellen möchte. Bei einem NC Kopfhörer achte ich u. a. darauf, dass die Akkulaufzeit und Passform für mich auch tatsächlich stimmig sind (Over Ear oder OnEar etc.). Bei einem portablen Kopfhörer schaue ich erstmal, ob dieser überhaupt für mein Abspielgerät, welches ich unterwegs primär nutzen möchte, überhaupt infrage kommt. (Ohm, Dezibel, Frequenzgang etc.). Nutze ich hierfür beispielsweise ein iPhone muss ich nämlich auch im Vorhinein nachsehen, ob der Kopfhörer hierfür überhaupt konzipiert wurde und gegebenenfalls am iPhone die Settings anpassen (Lautstärke etc. hierfür gibt es im Internet massenweise Anleitungen). Möchte ich allerdings hingegen einen Kopfhörer mit “Bühne”, von der so viele Menschen sprechen, die sich den DENON gekauft haben, wähle ich eigentlich persönlich eher Kopfhörer mit offener Bauweise oder habe hier einen entsprechenden Kopfhörerverstärker am Start, der meinen Kopfschmuck auch entsprechend »befeuern« kann. 🎧🎧Meine Testbedingungen🎧🎧 Bei meinem Test des DENON D7200 spielte ich ihn erstmal mit einer bzw. bei jedem neuen Kopfhörer mit immer derselben Playliste ab um mir überhaupt eine gewisse Vergleichsmöglichkeit zu geben. Hier ist das u. a. Hardrock, Rock, Pop, Jazz, Vocals, Moviesounds etc. inbegriffen. Das Abspiel erfolgte über einen Kopfhörerverstärker am PC sowie mittels eines lizensierten Upgrade-Kabel auf meinem Android Smartphone (auch sowas kann man mit einem so teuren KH machen). Klang ist sicherlich immer subjektiver Natur und wird von jedem anders wahrgenommen, aber wer einen primär als stationär gedachten Kopfhörer für 600 Euro kauft und sich darüber beschwert, dass kein analytisches Hören für “geübte Ohren” möglich wäre. Dies ist (pardon) für mich jemand, der sich einen tiefer gelegten 300 PS Sportwagen “gegönnt hat” und sich darüber beschwert, dass dieser bei Geländefahrten aufsetzt, oder aber “schon” bei 260 km/h dicht macht! Wie so vieles im Leben ist auch diese Wahrnehmung als sehr relativ zu betrachten! Klangcheck des Denon AH-D7200 Over Ear Kopfhörer Vom Grundton her empfinde ich persönlich den Kopfhörer als recht warm. Ob dies nun am Chassis aus Holz oder doch eher den verbauten 50 mm Treibern liegen mag, bleibt wohl das “Sahnige Geheimnis” der Klang-Ingineure von DENON. Neutral spielt der Kopfhörer nicht, er bietet eine leicht dunkle Klangwiedergabe oder anders ausgedrueckt, er bietet leichte Bassbetonung, was mir persönlich gefällt – aber natürlich in diesem Preissegment nicht “Jedermanns-Sache” ist. Die Mitten sind etwas zurückgenommen, passen sich aber im Abspiel, wie ich finde, super je nach gehörtem Genre ein. Hier mit mit Rock, Jazz oder Folk sowie divese Popsongs runterzuhören macht Spaß und gibt einen gewissen Mitnahmeeffekt. Die Höhen agieren auf einem durchweg hohem Niveau und halten auch unter Volllast bei allen durch mich absgespielten Songs absolut stand! Wenn ich hier die Möglichkeit der Feinabstimmung mithilfe eines Equalizers habe, hole ich diese noch einen Schritt weiter nach vorne und habe dann ein wirklich rundes und stimmiges Klangbild. Nehme ich diese Feststellungen nun in Summe kurz gesagt zusammen, bekomme ich einen klanglich sehr präzisen, nicht klangneutralen HI-RES AUDIO Kopfhörer mit leichter Bass-Note. 🎧🎧Optik und Haptik des Denon AH-D7200 Over Ear Kopfhörer🎧🎧 Hier ist schon ein Stück weit Zunge schnalzen angesagt. Das Walnussholz passt sich nahtlos in die matte und massive wirkende Metallhalterung und das Kopfbügelsystem ein. Ein edel wirkender Purist würde es glaube ich ganz gut treffen. Das mit Leder bezogene Kopfband wurde mit weißen Nähten bedacht und gibt optisch einen kleinen „Kick“. Insgesamt vermittelt der Kopfhörer einen stabilen und wertigen Eindruck. Durch seine ca. 385 Gramm Kampfgewicht sollte man sich schon gut überlegen diesen portabel einzusetzen, aber für den Gebrauch in den heimischen vier Wänden ein sicherlich richtig gutes Stück Wertarbeit! Da sich die Lauscher individuell an das jeweilige Ohr anpassen lassen (Drehbar) hat man die Möglichkeit diese optimal auszutarieren. 🎧🎧Tragekomfort🎧🎧 Der Kopfhörer bietet ein für meine Begriffe äußerst ausgeglichenes Verhältnis zwischen Tragekomfort und Alltagstauglichkeit. Die Kopfhörer umschließen die Ohren vollkommen und sitzen im für mich absolut richtigen Verhältnis auf den Ohren auf. Auch nach stundenlangem Hören keine Spur von Anpressdruck oder „Blutleeren Ohren“. Die Wärmeentwicklung hält sich auf einem absolut überschaubaren Level. Das Kopfband liegt angenehm leicht auf und vermittelt ein schon fast natürliches Tragegefühl. Ich trage häufig Mützen bzw. Baseballkappen und auch hiermit habe ich noch immer genug Spiel, um den Kopfhörer optimal für meine wirklich nicht gerade kleine „Murmel“ anzupassen. Die Polsterung der Lauscher ist mit knapp 2 cm so konzipiert, dass beim Tragen nichts drückt und man hiermit sicherlich über viele Stunden hinweg einen absolut bequemen Sitz erleben kann. 🎧🎧Zum Schluss - das Fazit zum Denon AH-D7200 Over Ear Kopfhörer 🎧🎧 Der DENON konnte für mich in allen für mich persönlich relevanten Kriterien punkten und hat es geschafft, was schon lange kein stationärer Kopfhörer mehr geschafft. Mich klanglich einzufangen und Spielfreude zu vermitteln. Er ist nicht Neutral, was man bereits von DENON kennt. Das kann man mögen oder eben auch nicht. Für mich kommt hier eine Sternewertung von satten 4,5 zusammen und somit auch eine satte Empfehlung! Der Kopfhörer gefällt mir bei allen ausgetesteten Genres und sogar beim Abspiel über das Smartphone hält er für “mobile Verhältnisse” die Messlatte recht hoch! Das müssen andere Kopfhörer für mich erstmal besser machen! Ich würde mich freuen, wenn ich dem einen oder anderen etwas weiterhelfen konnte. Letztlich gilt, Du/Sie Allein entscheiden, was geht oder eben nicht geht. Du/Sie entscheiden, was gefällt! Du/Sie entscheiden über Top oder Flopp und da sollten Du/Sie sich auch durch keinen der „selbsternannten“ Klangexperten reinreden lassen!😉 🎧🎧🤘🏼In diesem Sinne Rock on!🎧🎧🤘🏼
