Works very well to keep the sun off you when walking around doing survey work in the desert. Somewhat like having a cloud above you for shade. Does not double fold collapse, which is unfortunate for packability, but probably also means higher durability. I'm usually wearing a backpack, so if I need to pack it away for a few minutes I'll just collapse it, and stick it horizontally behind my back where the bottom straps of the backpack will catch it. Not the most comfortable long term, but for a light pack and a short duration, works fine for me. I chose this size as a compromise between coverage, wind resistance, and weight. Some days a larger one would absolutely be nicer... but it would become unmanageable at wind speeds where this is totally fine... So to each their own.

I gave this 5 stars because there was no option to give it 6! This parasol ROCKS!!! It's an absolute game changer!!! Light weight and very effective! I'm section hiking the PCT and started section F (edge of the Mojave Desert) on July 1. It would've been impossible without the shade this umbrella provided. I got lucky with low winds. If it's very windy, it's not really viable. But then the "wind chill" helps keep you cooler. I would recommend "tightening" velcro straps on at least 3 points of your shoulder straps to secure it. If you can do that, and the winds are not strong, you will absolutely LOVE this parasol!!!

Small, light weight, and big enough to do the job. These reflective umbrellas are outstanding for backpacking and overlanding. I've used this in blistering desert heat. Easily drops felt temps by a good 20-30F and keeps me out of the sun. Love it.

Very light weight and easy to carry. Just wish it was a bit bigger, like a golf umbrella.

Ultralight and sturdy. Made of high quality components. I would not use it as a daily umbrella, but it will make for a fantastic hiking umbrella.

constant companion when hiking

I use sun shirts, but found when the sun is not overhead, that my neck and side of my face can get exposed. Being older, 55, and already recovered from bladder cancer, I'm more aware of other exposure. Aside from the cancer protection, I find that the shade reduces heat exposure as well. Good quality, light weight and I like that it says 50 spf rating.

Love this Umbrella. I waited a long time to purchase this item because, why not just use a cheaper umbrella? But now, its my go to option for all umbrella-related needs. The size, weight and usability of the opening mechanism makes it great, not just for hiking conditions but all conditions. I used this hiking in rain as well as in sun. You can definitely feel the difference when using it to keep cool(er) in hot conditions. Because it is so light you can manufacture some sort of holding device on your pack if you want to be hands free. I also decided to travel with this umbrella to Paris instead of bring a collapsible/shorter option because it as just so light and enjoyable to use when needed. Its longer than other ready-use umbrellas but light weight and ease of opening and shutting is more important to me in the long run.

It's very light and resist strong winds and storms. Highly recommended.
