What is the coating on the wood smoker? Is it varnish or oil?

There doesn't seem to be much of a finish, but I would have to say it seems more like an oil then a varnish.

Does the kit come with any recipe ideas?

Your to just put it with a favorite bourbon or I’m sure you can do scotch. Not really meant for mixed drink kind of stuff.
