My husband made it work without permanently altering the sides of the door opening. we have a puppy so we know eventually we won’t need the gate anymore. It’s a bit make-shifty because if it’s temporary nature and it can be improved by painting it. Each side is altered with three pieces of wood secured by large screws which serves to clamp it down into place. I suppose you can use an actual wood clamp but that would look even more make-shifty. Pressure is created by screwing the wood pieces together so it’s not screwed into the wall at all. (Hopefully it won’t leave an indentation). I hope the video gives you an idea of what was done. The wood was placed at the upper-middle side of the door opening and the gate is secured by pushing the handle down securing it in place with a pressure mount, as you know. It works really well. In the video it look like I was struggling to remove it and put it back into place but I have arthritis in my hands pretty bad and that’s why I was struggling. It’s very simple to release the gate and put it back into place. I love this gate. We have another one downstairs in our kitchen that does not need adjusting. Anyway, I hope this helps you. It is stronger than the wood ones you can buy but the mechanism can be difficult to work. You really need good hand strength to get it in and out of place and changes the width can be a bit of a struggle. It comes with hardware to install it permanently and it works great as a permanent gate but it is not very good as one you need to move around change all the time. if you need a gate you can move and change often I would go with the Safety 1st Perfect Fit Gate. It cost more but its just better.
