King Kubera was the greediest man in the world. Hated and feared by many, he schemed to win the love of the beautiful goddess Parvati . . . but learned an important lesson when he invited her elephant-headed son Ganesha over for lunch one day . . . So goes one of the many delightful tales in this decidedly grown-up book of traditional Indian stories, retold for the modern reader. Author Kamla Kapur is well known in her native India as a poet and playwright, and her connection to these age-old stories is the reverent yet individualistic one we might expect from someone whose introduction tells of her hometown, where naked, dreadlocked holy men speed about on motorbikes. To collect these stories, Kapur relied on ancient sacred texts, modern scholarship, and chance encounters with interesting people who just happened to know a really good one about this time that Vishnu sank into the ocean, was incarnated as a pig, and had a really wonderful time. Like myths around the world, these are teaching stories that offer both a window into a fascinating culture that has endured for thousands of years, and a code for living that can be applied to the modern world. Review: I give this book to friends more than any other - This is a favorite book of mine--it retells these stories gorgeously, with an easy clarity and lightness that somehow makes their messages pierce me deeply. It's a delightful read and often surprisingly moving. Review: Gifts of the heart - What a beautiful book. After every story, I pause with emotion and a fuller heart. Myths speak to us in a different way. You don’t know where they’re going but when you get to the end you feel their messages in a deep way. I highly recommend this and every book from Kamla. She offers such gifts of spirit to the world. So blessed that I found her. She shares her beautiful spirit in these lessons of love.

A fun and magical collection of short stories of the gods of India.
I love this book! My wife got it for me for my birthday and although I have only read the first 3 chapters I felt compelled to write a review. Each chapter is a short story of the gods of India and told in such a fun and magical way! I love nothing more than to put on some Eastern meditation music, light some incense and get lost in one of these wonderful stories! I find myself smiling, laughing or really contemplating what the message of the story might be. The chapters are very short and quick to read and I can't wait for my next one.

Great book
This is a great book for anyone looking for an introduction to the spiritual/philosophical and (sometimes whimsical)l stories of Hindu tradition. They are a pleasure to read on many levels. Kapur's translation is excellent; You feel she is reading to you... I bought the Kindle edition. I regret not buying the book. I have since seen it and it is beautifully done. This is one I would like to hold in my hands.

Highly recommend
I loved reading this book! It's a great before bedtime read as you can read one short story and put it down...if you have that kind of discipline of course. I have already gone back and started reading this a second time. It's that good.

Absolutely Beautiful
This book is absolutely beautiful. She re-tells the stories that I have always wanted to hear about. The stories of the Indian culture are fascinating and she tells tem beautifully. As soon as I picked up this book, I had to finish it. What else is there to say other than if you have little kids or nephew and nieces, it's a great book to give them to read.

Bought for my son, but got immersed in it myself
Bought this book, to introduce gods to my son, on someone’s recommendation. My son is 5, so I started to read it first to simplify stories for him. Such captivating stories and beautifully articulated language. I got hooked on to it. P.S. This is definitely not for children below the age of 10, I feel. But still a good book to read and talk about with your child.
