Can you lay the bottle on it's side, does it leak?

You can absolutely lay the bottle on its side without leakage. These are my favorites for keeping bubbly fresh! Enjoy!

What is it made of(I'm looking for plastic free)

Mostly metal...but inside the black cap, there's the actual stopper, which of course is plastic..so it can squeeze into the champagne bottle.

Does this work on a 1.5 liter bottle of champagne? How long will it keep the bubbles fizzy?

The handy Cuisinart Champagne Stopper provides a leak-proof, airtight seal to ensure your champagne stays bubbly for up to 3 days. This convenient stopper boasts easy, one-handed operation for hassle-free use. Keeps your bottle of champagne fresh and bubbly for up to 3 days Leak-proof, airtight seal One-handed operation for ease of use BPA-free Carbon steel Hand wash Measures 2.33" L x 1.68" W x 2.41" H Lifetime manufacturer's warranty

Is this Dishwasher safe?

It most likely is but I have always just rinsed it off with water. It really does not get dirty enough to require cleaning in a dishwasher.
