The film begins with a perfect lunatic of a New York City cab driver [Mel Gibson]. The utter chaos his behavior bestows on the first 10 minutes of Conspiracy Theory had me, remote-in-hand, ready to press "STOP" quickly followed by the "EJECT" button. But patience is an oft-rewarded virtue, and this movie is a good example. If you can hang on for the roller coaster-totally bizarre introduction, the plot becomes "curious-er and curious-er" as Alice said after meeting the Mad Hatter. Julia Roberts is, as always, an exceptional and unforgettable presence who becomes an unwitting accomplice to the seemingly unhinged Jerry Fletcher. As the "coincidences' begon to accrue, however, Alice [Julia Roberts], a very sharp attorney for the Justice Department, gradually begins to involuntarily put 2 and 2 and 2 together in her unbelieving, computer-like mind. And then, heavens to Betsy, the suave debonair, diabolical Doctor Jonas, the very source of Jerry's paranoid nightmare-like existence. Played by none other than? Patrick Stewart. YES! Our gold-plated "Good Guy". And how he seems to relish playing this fantastic role as the villanous, terrible Doctor Jonas, working for [Who Else] "The Gummint". Such a fine coterie of sociopaths they are, trying to annihilate Mel and Julia. This film is a real plot twister: well-acted, well-directed, well-photographed, and with a lovely music score that will stay with you well after you have viewed Conspiracy Theory. Oh, and not long ago, this film was re-issued in a Blue-Ray transfer. I'm not always impressed with the "Blu-Ray" thing, and these upgraded films ar sometimes considerably more expensive. This film looks [and sounds] so great presented in the Blu-Ray medium, that I'm more than happy at having spent the extra bucks...well-worth it for an outstanding production.

Not Conspiracies but Facts - Don't Miss It
A great movie, well-plotted, fast-paced, and well-acted.The mind of Jerry (Mel Gibson) was deliberately cracked (MK Ultra'ed) to turn him into a zombie who kills on command and can't remember doing it. Just the sort of human weapon needed by a mysterious group of Psychos-in-Charge who are able to give orders to both the FBI and CIA.When the movie begins, Jerry has already escaped from his Mind-Programmer, a former CIA psychiatrist played creepily well by Patrick Stewart. Jerry is on the run but he can't remember why. Jerry hides out in his bunker-apartment and spends his time driving cab and reading dozens of newspapers to ferret out the evil doings of what turns out to be a Cartel of International Investment Bankers (note the name on Patrick Stewart's office door). Stewart wants to find out what Jerry knows about Stewart's employers...before terminating Jerry. While driving his cab, Jerry expounds his wide-ranging theories to his passengers. Jerry knows whereof he speaks. Jerry also decides to publish a "conspiracy" newsletter, which he sends to five subscribers. Four of his subscribers end up dead within 48 hours. Jerry's newsletter has revealed a space-based weapon that could jeopardize the Cartel's secret arsenal of control. The titles of the four stories in Jerry's newsletter were:1. The Truth About UFOs2. The Space Shuttle's Seismic Secret3. The Oliver Stone - George Bush [Sr] Connection [This is a hoot; Jerry-Mel exposes the truth here.]4. Alien Faces on MarsJerry is in love with the Julia Roberts character. He solicits her to help him warn the president that his life is in dangerJerry and Julia also are connected by the shooting death of her father. Why was her father murdered? And did Jerry do it under the influence of MK Ultra? If you watch this movie, along with "The Truman Show" starring Jim Carrey and "The Game" starring Michael Douglas, you will learn more about Power Politics than by studying Political Science at a university.

Audio SUUUCCCKKS
Thanks Amazon for refunding me. I think the speakers in my TV may be blown now. The dialog is sSOOOOo freakin quiet I can't hear anything being said so I have to turn it WAAAYYYY up and then of course, suddenly, a horn honks or something is dropped or a character shouts and now I'm deaf and very irritated. Movie seems like a classic I'm missing out on but I can't sit through movies like this. Whoever was in charge of audio production for this film fkn SUCKS

Mel Gibson and Julia Roberts at their finest!
I have this on VHS, but wanted it on a DVD. I liked that it had a lot of the deleted scenes in it, which always makes movies easier to understand and enjoy. It's a movie that not only entertains you, it really makes you think! It keeps you on your toes and on the edge of your seat. Mel Gibson does an outstanding performance in this movie.

Gibson Classic on Blu Ray
This 1997 Gibson classic sees him join his Lethal Weapon and Maverick director Richard Donner from a great fun thriller Co starring Julia Roberts and Patrick Stewart as the bad guy. There are countless synopsis of the movie here so all I'll add is that the HD upgrade on the film is beautiful in sound and vision. It is also REGION FREE which means it'll play in UK players without a problem like all Warner releases, which is a blessing as this film is yet to be released on Blu Ray in the UK.

Very good
Both films are good. Payback comes in two versions 4:3 on side A and widescreen on side B of disk. Didn't spot this until I'd watched it in 4:3 because it is in very small print. Doh!

a love story with a twist......
picture and sound quality definitely worth the upgrade, a very good film, gibson and roberts have a good chemistry here, only complaint would be the films length, could have finished earlier, the end is a little dragged out....
