It's an ammonia salt that is probably in the spray to stop static and also keep it from growing bacteria and algae. It can be obtained naturally from the normal ammonia sources like urine but most likely it was lab mixed for purity. From the dictionary : Behentrimonium chloride, also known as docosyltrimethylammonium chloride or BTAC-228, is a yellow waxlike organic compound with chemical formula3213, used as an antistatic agent and, sometimes, a disinfectant. It is commonly found in cosmetics such as conditioners, hair dye, and mousse, and also in detergents. In water treatment, it acts as an algaecide.

Is this only for kids?

I use it myself, along with the shampoo and conditioner. Great for adults! Wish they made this in the almond scent too!
