I'd done henna a few times before so I knew what I was in for, process-wise... ish.But let me back up and say I love the color... either/both colors! The image on the left is after step 1; the image on the right is after step 2. I think they say you don't have to do it in two steps, but I as this was a new to me product I wanted to follow their best results instructions so I could judge it fairly. I'll definitely be using this product again.I choose henna and indigo because I just don't want chemicals. Also, henna is supposedly good for your hair. My hair (as you can see) is pretty wild (frizzy mostly), so anything that is good for it is something I'm interested in.I was ready to start yesterday morning but then read in the instructions that the henna needs to sit for 8-10 hours after being mixed. Alrighty then... so I mixed it up (with coffee rather than water as suggested) and waited 8 hours.Applying it can be messy. Try to get the perfect consistency so it's not too runny (will drip everywhere) and not to dry (will crumble off your head and make a mess). I did add a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar (as suggested) because I used the entire package for my hair. Next time I may only need to do roots so will use less vinegar.They do supply one shower cap which is handy. I don't like reusing caps after they have had dye on them so I think they should spring for putting two caps into each package since they're recommending a two-step process. Luckily I had my own for step two.Since you're supposed to do this on dry hair, I did wait and do step two the next day rather than the same day (they say either is fine).My hair feels soft and the coverage was good (I have EXTREMELY resistant gray hair). I'll come back and update this review if I find the color fades or washes out too quickly. But since I was previously using those coloring conditioners, I feel like the henna/indigo will definitely outlast those. I'm keeping the coloring conditioners for my eyebrows. Just don't feel like waiting 6 hours with stuff caked on my eyebrows (each step is 3 hours).

This was my first time using a henna product. I ordered this particular product because it had good reviews and I wanted a dark brown color more so than the typical red. Granted I only ordered one and went through the process of coloring once so far, I was happy with the results. There are two ways of going about coloring this particular Dark Henna item: 2 step process for which one would probably would need 2 days or 1 step process which entails combining henna packet with the dark brown mix (both options were detailed in the insert that came with the product). For the sake of saving time, I went with the 1-step route. I mixed as indicated in the instructions but also added coffee for a more dramatic darker effect. I also did not have the mixture sit for awhile as suggested in the instructions. However, I did leave it in my hair for about 4 hours and had my hair covered the entire time in order to have it in warmth. I also washed as instructed by the product -- did not use shampoo for the first wash (it does take awhile to wash the henna out without shampoo or soap). The color turned out rich and exactly the shade of dark brown I wanted. It had a hint of red that was noticeable when the light caught it. The henna continued to wash off with the second and third times I washed my hair. Eventually, the dark color washed off but remained on the darker side, but definitely can see the red more now after a few weeks of wear than after the initial color. I am still pretty happy with the results. It seems to be lasting just fine and I don't feel the need to re-touch or re-color yet and it's been almost a month for me (I have long curly/wavy thick hair that is on the dry side). Granted everyone's hair is different would probably require a different approach to this process, I must say that I am pleased despite the long process it entails. No more chemicals for me!!!

I was hopeful to transition from dark brown box dye to a more natural product. But I was sadly disappointed. I felt like I was poisoned when using the henna. Nauseated, lightheaded, and lethargic. I had to leave it on my head for three hours feeling this way. The next day I used the Indigo for another three hours. This did not make me feel ill, but it barely toned down the extreme bright red I had on my roots. My hair is naturally light gray, so the color was intense.I wasn’t about to repeat this futile exercise again. So I started to research removing henna and Indigo from the hair. It’s almost impossible. Unlike box dye where you can use “color oops” and loosen the bond with the hair, henna bonds with the cuticle.Sally Beauty aesthetician recommended I use vodka to break the bond of the henna and Indigo from the hair shaft. This did help a little bit but I still have the bright red roots.You can also have a reaction if you try to use another box dye over the henna and it can break off your hair or turn it green so I decided I wanted it out of my hair as much as possibleI then tried equal parts of baking soda, 20 developer and dandruff shampoo because I needed to remove a semi permanent hair color anyway. A licensed cosmologist recommended this. This greatly lightened my hair but barely touched the henna roots.I then used an oil treatment which is supposed to be the a gentle way to loosen the bond of the henna to the hair shaft. I mixed coconut oil and a heavy caster oil and wrap it in plastic and heat often on for a few hours. I’ve been added glycerin, which comes from oil and lime juice for the citric acid to lighten it overall. This all helped, but I still had fairly bright red roots.I did a patch test with “Color Fix” to make sure it would not break my hair at the roots where the henna was. Some reported it had hurt turn their hair green. The strand test didn’t seem to hurt my hair, so I proceeded to use it all over my head. Repeated. Faded my hair but still orange roots.I then patch tested bleaching a strand of hair along with the bright orange root. It didn’t turn green or break off so I proceeded to bleach my whole head, except for one inch at root. The last 15 minutes I worked the bleach into the roots as well. All the box died came out, but I still had light orange roots.I used a light ash blonde toner with red orange corrector drops added and 20 volume developer.This makes my hair silver and ash blonde but the roots are still a toned down warm color. I’ll continue to use the hot oil treatment on the roots every few days to see if I can remove it. This whole thing has literally taken days of my life to try to correct. I will never use henna.

Excellent hair dye. It was a little light than my very dark brown almost black hair but all in the same looks very nice. I did my beard and hair and it left no rashing and did not itch at all afterwards like Just For Men beard dye. Also. I love the way my hair and beard feels now. Nice a soft and not rough at all. I only have 4 stars because of two things. The smell is strong and earthy and I could still smell it slightly in my hair in day two/three. It's not a quick process, takes hours to complete but it's worth the wait so if your strapped for time like I am then this wont be for you.

This review is specifically for the Jet Black color.I usually get dark brown, but i wanted to change it up and go darker this time, so I got the jet black. It comes with a packet of henna and a packet of indigo, exactly the same as the dark brown, which at first confused me... like is it even a different product or are they just packaging it differently and charging $2 more?I followed all the instructions, using coffee and apple cider vinegar, letting the mixture rest for the necessary time, leaving both mixtures in my hair for 3+ hours, only using cool water to rinse, and not shampooing for 72 hours.Immediately after the whole process, my hair was black. Exactly how i wanted it. But then after just one shampoo (with cold water), the black fades a ton. And after two, it looks exactly the same as when i use the "dark brown" color of this product. I think the black i saw initially was just because there was still indigo in my hair. It doesn't really make it black for more than 72 hours.My greys are covered and the color my hair settled to is nice, so i'm not REALLY mad about it, but i'm not wasting extra money on the jet black ever again.

I am a 63 yr old Black woman and I use Henna to enhance my original color and as a protein treatment. I am about 30%+ gray and really not hiding the gray but more to help the remaining color look vibrant and not lost. Have tried many Henna brands and so far this one is the best. I bought the Dark Brown.1 - Mixes easy and the wait time to activate the Henna is 30 mins for the color henna. There is a packet of plain Henna included and it must stand for 8-10 hrs to activate.2 - After applying , I use plastic wrap and top with a plastic cap. Keeps the henna in place and moist for easier wash out. Henna required to stay on for 3 hrs.3 - Wash out was easier than expected, rinsed with cool water and didn't fell like I had remaining grit. My hair has tendency to get dry using henna so I followed up with a Co Wash conditioner. Saturated my head and then rinsed again. Hair was soft and felt wonderful, no girt or residue feeling.I air dry my hair and then followed up with a coconut based oil on my scalp.I followed the enclosed instructions and added my tweaks based on my experiences with Henna.Color is really intense but not too false looking. I'll monitor the fading and decide if I want to mix a Mahogany with the Dk Brn to get the color closer to my original, which has always had red highlights.*For those looking for gray coverage, this Henna covered more than I expected. Other Henna's stained or color some of my gray with a red tint. This henna 'covered' and minimized my grays. I still see some but it has a nice effect.My hair style is a pixie cut, based on my length expect that the package will last for a minimum of 3-4 uses. I had mix left over and had to throw it out.Overall very pleased with the results.I'll follow up with comments on color retention after a couple of washes.

I am beyond thrilled with the results of using this henna. This was my fist experience using henna to color my hair. I have used it prior for body art. I had many questions that were promptly answered by the seller.This is definitely an undertaking - however, I feel it was well worth it. I know other reviews mentioned the smell. I think it smells like the loose tea I drink - so, I was not bothered by that at all. I made sure I had all the proper tools - ie: cape, gloves, mixing bowl, dye brush and plastic cap. I got all of these things from Amazon for less than $20. The biggest pain was in the application. It is basically like putting thick mud on you hair. The paste thickens and is hard to work into your hair once its on you head for a few minutes. It took some time and effort to get it all on evenly. It would definitely be a HUGE bonus to have someone apply it for you. However, I did manage. I did it close to bedtime and fell asleep with it on my hair. So it was on from 8:00 pm until 4:00 am. Washing out all the dried henna took awhile and it did leave my hair dry & gritty. I slathered on my WEN conditioning cleanser, put another cap on & went back to sleep for a few hours. I got up & rinsed it out and my hair was much softer. The color is a beautiful radiant red. My blonde highlights did come out a brighter orange red - so I am interested to see how they develop over the next few days. It actually gives my hair that tone on tone look. I'm glad I chose this particular brand over the regular boxed henna - because you have to mix that the night before and let it "rest" overnight. I will definitely be using this henna from now on. The color is perfect. There is more work involved - but in the end I happy. The normal hair dyes gave me migraines from the ammonia and wreaked havoc on my hair. I might try and add a little olive oil to my paste next time. I see that others have done this with the regular boxed henna. It definitely helps to do do your research and read the reviews before trying this for the first time. It does help to have some insight of what you need to make the job easier and what to expect throughout the process. I felt very confident going into this process.*** UPDATE: It has been a week now and every time I wash my hair the color bleeds out. A lot. Be sure to have an old towel that you can use continually. I do not use a sulfate shampoo. I use a cleansing conditioner. My hair has also faded quote a bit :( I am going to reapply this again this weekend and see if the color stays on better with a 2nd application. MAKE SURE TO USE GLOVES AT ALL TIMES. I did not wear them when rinsing my hair and there is still a rusty color stain on them.

The product arrived with a nice instructional pamphlet. Including a disposable cap and gloves which is helpful. This process took 2 days. First you have to prepare the first henna. Mix it accordingly to instructions and let it sit for 8 hours so it can release the color.I prepared the first step the night prior to application. The next day I was ready to apply. The first packet was not enough to cover my long (just below the shoulders) hair so I focused on the roots (my hair was clean and dry prior to application). That is where I have my white hair so no problem. Applied it, then I wrapped my head in saran wrap because the cap did not fit my entire head with having to bunch my hair on top of my head and having a big head. Left the color on for 3 hours. Rinsed well, no conditioner, no shampoo. Head felt sore but was committed.Then I mixed the 2nd packet of dark brown henna. Let it rest according for color release. Applied it, went through the whole process of saran wrap and cap. This is because you don't want the henna to dry because it will become brittle otherwise and not adhere to the hair. Another 3 three hours.Rinsed my hair well with just water. My hair smelled like smoked sage or tobacco like. Okay so my head hurt by the end of the process. I went to sleep with a mild headache. I understand that henna might not cover grey the first time and that another application is recommended. The color as you can see, the second picture turn out a coppery bunt apricot color. It did not cover the grey as I hoped and it was an all day process. If henna is better for me and mama earth I don't mind but still recouping from the headache and I can't get that smokey smell out of my hair.More than anything, I didn't like all the plastic that is needed to cover the head as it's not good for the environment so if I were to do this on a regular bases, I would purchase a reusable plastic head cap that is big enough to stuff my thick hair in it, so I am not adding to landfill waste. The reason I chose to do henna is that I want to stop using harmful chemicals in coloring my hair. It is also important to do my part in helping the environment. I won't be purchasing from this buyer again, not that I had a negative experience. I will try starwest botanicals (egyptian henna) next but first I must recover and see how I am going to go about doing this in a more comfortable and greener way.

I use this all the time. Turns red after a while, but then I redo it. You have to get the feel for what works for you. Will order when it is finished. Lasts a long time

Beautiful result. Very easy to use and natural looking vibrant color. Will definitely use again.
