## Questions & Answers

**Q: I couldn't find the temperature rating. Can it get to baking temps (350-400)?**
A: I have 3 types of solar ovens. After cooking in them for years and researching issues:

You can use any type of cookware, including silicon molds. I like the Tupperware bakeware that's some sort of black composite and feels like heavy tupperware. Go to thrift stores and buy dark pans. Watch YouTube videos on how to cook anything.

Temps: YouTube videos taught me that solar ovens will cook anything at 250F. It doesn't matter what the baked good recipe says. If you heat the oven to 350F then place food inside (any kind of dough, etc.) the temperature drops until the temp of the food catches up with the oven temp. But I bake cookies nonetheless. They won't bake as fast and require periodic checking...Same with pancakes. But cooking occurs whether it's 325F or 400F. The trick is getting the oven pointed at the sun. I don't have the built-in guide. I just make certain the shadow is equal off the backside, pointing away from the sun, on both sides... Water purification occurs between 160-180F. This is why you just bring it to a boil and it's ready.

OffGrid Doug &Stacy on YouTube have a lot of cooking videos like hardboiling eggs without a pot and water.

I don't own this type of solar oven, but it appears to be manufactured out of something more than the original cardboard. Or it's coated in yellow plastic? My SOS solar oven is great for cooking briskets. My Sun Oven is also useful for dehydrating vegetables and the swinging rack is genius.

**Q: I read of some people not being able to use this to cook food? Has anyone experienced this? Thanks.**
A: We got one and I wasn't sure about eating meat cooked in it... but we burned lasagna the first time we cooked in it. I figure if it's hot enough to burn food, it's hot enough to cook meat. I havent had any problems being able to cook food in it.

**Q: whats the best cookware to use with this and where can I buy it?**
A: The best is dark in color, fairly thin, and with a tight-fitting lid. Lots of different types of cookware can work, but if you are just starting out, get yourself a Granite Ware 3 pound round roasting pan with lid. These are the "go to" pot for a lot of solar cooking. For myself, even after 20 years of solar cooking, and with a plethora of solar pans in my collection, I still use my round Granite Ware pot for 60-70 percent of my solar cooking.

**Q: what are the folded/collapsed dimensions?**
A: "When folded for shipment the cooker is in a 18 by 16 by 4 inch box. Once out of the box it can be folded in half to form a 48" by 24" by 1/2". I fold them small to fit in the box. This saves a lot on shipping because the box is not oversize. Once out of the box, I just fold mine in half and store it flat under the bunk in my motorhome,
