I bought the Western Razor to replace a Merkur MK34c DE razor that only lasted 2 years. The western razor is better made razor than the merkur. It has a better arch for the razor that makes it cut better. I have been very pleased with this razor.

I can remember my dad using this type of safety razor when I was a little boy. By the time I became a teenager, twin blade razors (either disposables or replaceable cartridges) were popular. As time went on, the number of blades increased as did the price. The next phase of razor buying was the subscription service, and I went down that path. I finally made the switch back to a single blade safety razor. It gives me a close shave while minimizing waste. I am saving a lot of money over replaceable cartridges and subscriptions, and I am using an American made product. For those considering a jump to a single blade safety razor, let me encourage you to do so. I was concerned about the feel of the razor in my hand and the contact position of the blade against my face. I had a fear that I was going to come away from my first few shaves with cuts everywhere. This was not the case. I picked up the feel of the razor very easily, and I like the closeness of the shave. I don't see myself ever going back to a multi-blade razor.

This reminded me of my grandfather's razor. I used it for a month now. Is it better than modern razors? Sadly no. It's different and I have to switch razors more than the modern razor. Maybe because the modern has 4 blades. I used it for a month & this weekend I stayed out of town & in my travel bag I had a modern razor. It cut better & smoother. I did not realize what I was missing. So it is OK but not up to today's standards.
