Superman/Wonder Woman Vol. 1: Power Couple (The New 52)

Best couple ever in DC universe.

My first exposure to the scribblings of Charles Soule and... I enjoyed it very much. The relationship between Wonder Woman and Superman should, for all intents and purposes, be complex, but Soule manages to keep it simple between the two and create a mature, solid foundation for romance. I really like the "power couple" dynamic at work here. Speaking of dynamic, few artists draw Wonder Woman better than Tony S. Daniel. So much so that one feels cheated if he is not pencilling every story, which turns out to be the case in succeeding volumes. Again, I really enjoyed this book. Highly recommended.

It may have thrown purists for a loop when the New 52 Superman ending up in a relationship with Wonder Woman instead of Lois Lane, but I actually really enjoyed this pairing for what it was. The first volume of this series was easily my favorite as the pairing deals with both the travails of dating while enjoying newfound celebrity as the world's most powerful superheroes as well as juggling their secret identities. The main arc of the story sees Supes and W.W. running afoul of General Zod of Krypton who at first seems to be a gentleman simply seeking to connect with his fellow Kryptonian survivor. However, after being allowed access to the Fortress of Solitude, Zod releases his lieutenant and lover Faora from the Phantom Zone and prepares his plan of invading Earth with his military forces still trapped within the Zone. The story becomes a fun twist as two established lovers take on our two fledgling ones. The story gets an added wrinkle when Zod and Faora are powered up by Diana's trouble-making God siblings who don't take kindly to her new relationship with Supes. Overall this was a tremendous first offering for this series and the only real problem I have with it is that the series couldn't maintain this level of fun and quality throughout. Later volumes are either dragged down by relationship drama (Diana first wonders if she can stay with Clark when he can't accept her newfound role as God of War which means killing people and then later with Clark questioning his commitment to Diana after she uses the Lasso of Truth on his friends against his wishes) or by too many event tie ins (the second volume is incredibly broken up to a casual reader as it is all direct tie-ins to the Superman Doomed storyline).

Features a romantic link between the two main characters never imagined in previous comics.
