Wow! Not Just Skirt Patterns--A Sewing Tutorial as Well!
The Kindle version is a great deal for $2.50 for 28 skirt patterns. The ideas run the style gamut from youthful to classic styles. Many (not all) could be for any age from teen to senior with the simple adjustment of hem length and/or fabric choice. A very nice collection. There is a lot of basic information about clothing construction, tools for handsewing, pressing, a directory of machine needles and how to choose the correct one for a particular fabric, types of threads, various basic drafting tools and their use, instructions for pattern drafting, how to measure yourself--lots and lots and lots of good instruction and information with large clear illustrations and photographs. I think a determined novice could self-teach from the information provided, but access to a mentor (check out older ladies who've been sewing for decades and love to share their experience) would accelerate the learning process and minimize mistakes. A beginner with some construction experience under their belt would have a better chance of completing a wearable garment. The skirt patterns are not graded for difficulty and some of the designs may prove overly challenging for the inexperienced. If you have never made a garment before, may I suggest beginning with either the straight skirt ("pencil" skirt), or if your figure is a little "hippy," as in pear-shaped, the A-line skirt. Either of those will teach you (in addition to pattern drafting a simple shape) straight seams, attaching a waistband, inserting a zipper, hemming, and of course fitting. And that's more than plenty for a first project. The Kindle version does have some odd little hitches in a few places, but all the pages are accessible. I usually use Kindle for PC for instructional books to blow the illustrations and pictures to maximum size. The little slider button makes it painless to move back and forth over the places where the pages "stick." I can't imagine trying to use this book on a standard Kindle or the smaller Fire. Books like this are perfect for the Kindle for PC app. I didn't deduct any stars over this issue--the sheer volume of information trumps the sticky page issue.

Great designs and ideas
This book has all the tips you could need to make great skirts. The pattern drafting is also very simple and easy to follow, it makes adaptations easy as well. It also gets the creative ideas flowing so you can create your own skirts using these designs as a starting point.

Enough pencil skirts!
I read a lot of reviews before buying this book and I was reassured when experienced people said it was for beginners. But when I bought it and saw all the measurements and figures I was intimidated. Then a few days later I picked it up again and read more carefully. That’s when I realized this book was exactly what I was looking for. I love skirts, but all I can find in stores are pencil skirts and I wanted more. So I decided to learn to sew and make my own. This book is taking me step by step through the process of taking measurements properly to make a pattern and muslin for skirts that fit ME! Yeah, there are a lot of steps and measurements, but that’s what it takes. One hint: turn your Kindle or iPad so it’s oriented to portrait mode (instead of horizontally). It’s easier to display the charts and diagrams that way - and enjoy!

I have only made the easy level but I have plans to work my way ...
I'm a beginning-intermediate sewer so I'm fairly new to pattern making. I was surprised at how even I was able to make skirts that fit me by taking my own measurements and making my own patterns. I have only made the easy level but I have plans to work my way up to more advanced with more experience. I think her instructions and descriptions are well written and there is a large variety of skirt patterns to choose from.

Great ideas and wonderful springboard to being more creative with one's own creations.
I am teaching one of our teenaged daughters to sew. I have found most beginners can only strictly follow a pattern. This book has very cute ideas for stretching one's comfort zone and feeds the creativity that seems like a leap of faith for most new sewers. I will recommend it to everyone although the slant of the book is for young women we older gals can use some of the ideas if we modify them ever so slightly. It is the best skirt book I have found. I like it better than Burda's skirt book and much, much better than "Sew What Skirts." There are all the basic shapes: A-line, pencil, straight skirts and several others which I would consider variety skirts.

For sewists interested in fashion design and great fit
I've made several skirts using Smith's method, and they fit really well. The 28 skirts are mostly for young women--I found only a few suitable for mature women. However, by teaching the reader how to create her own pattern and then adapt it to different styles, the author is freeing people not only from the expense of patterns but also from the tyranny of poor fit.My only complaint about this book is that some instructions are not clear and sometimes steps are left out. The author assumes a greater knowledge of sewing than many people have, which can make this book frustrating. I've used it as a textbook in a sewing class, and marked up my copy to correct these shortcomings. If you are new to sewing, be aware that this isn't a beginner's book. But if you have sewing experience and want to break free from patterns, this book is for you.

Skirts and More Skirts
This is an excellent book with clear instructions for creating a skirt of your choice. The author does give you a wide variety of options to choose from. Once you get your basic sloper made, you are ready to go. What makes this book a standout are the clear illustrations and the variety of skirts for every taste. You can create a skirt for every day of the month. Skirt-a-Day Sewing: Create 28 Skirts for a Unique Look Every Day is instructional for beginners to the advanced sewer.

Great resource.
I look forward to trying many of the skirt ideas in the book and have no issue with the fact that no pattern is included as the base pattern is absolutely straightforward to construct. I docked a star due to the condition of the book as it arrived with a corner quite badly bent although it was considered to be in very good condition when ordered.
