can these bottles be refilled with a different kind of soap

No, these refills are sanitary sealed to avoid contamination and can't be refilled once empty.

how do I install the replacement soap refill for the dispenser?

Hello, please watch this video, https://www.webstaurantstore.com/video-6118/purell-es4-push-style-dispenser-installation-instructions.html.

I received a defective soap. Do I need to pay to return the defective one in order to get a new one?

it depends on the company you purchase from. One thing you may know is that you need to put your hand under the dispenser many times for it to dispense the soap.
