Good to throw in the trunk of a car or toolbox, as another reviewer stated? Go for it, but I say absolutely not. I took this to the bush on Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, NC and put it to the test; it performed better than expected. Can you baton with it? I batonned the heck out of this knife making small to medium stakes and poles for a lean to. It is not made for splitting firewood. I use my K-Bar BK2 or Gurkha Kukri Machete for this. Much like going to combat, the more "tools of the trade" you have, the better. The firesteel is awesome and regardless of what some folks say about the whistle; I found this whistle to be very loud (I took off the key ring and put one small piece of reflective tape on the whistle just in case I dropped it, no use for the key ring myself, but maybe a good fit for some people). In many ways though I prefer a strong Acorn shell, cannot be beaten in regard to size, abundance, correct pitch level and loudness. To solve the problem some reviewers had with the firesteel dropping out when carried vertically on the belt and the sheath is opened; turning the steel upside down is the easy answer, or sew its pocket tighter as well. It guts and dresses fish beautifully, can field dress any animal you would actually be likely to kill in a survival situation, batons beautifully, cuts paracord like butter, etc... Much like any weapon, it can be abused and damaged if used incorrectly. Thus, much like a rifle or pistol, it has to be treated with the correct respect. As far as the sheath goes; I love the design but the belt loop sucks. Paracord this sheath to your rucksack instead, but be sure to keep the blade facing down; it's not that it's velcro, it's just CHEAP velcro. I enjoy making modifications to my knife sheaths anyway; much like every Marine, Seal, PJ, Soldier, Police Officer & Bushman, you have to "personalize" your gear. I made a few adjustments myself as other reviewers have. People amaze me sometimes. Don't like the sharpness? Sharpen it. It's amazing how many Metallurgy experts there are doing knife reviews as well. The steel in this blade is excellent & easy to sharpen; mine is as sharp as a razor blade (arrived this way as well), and I will do my best to maintain it. This knife is balanced beautifully. Some people complain about the comfort of the handle. This has an extremely nice G-10 grip; it can be used as a modified fishing reel etc...(I used it to catch a Hammerhead off the coast of.....just playing LOL) If the handle isn't comfortable enough for you; wrap it in Paracord (completely unnecessary with the G-10 on it) Doing this however eliminates the purpose of a skeletonized knife handle; I Para Wrap almost every fixed blade knife I have; just depends on the type of skin on the handle. I personally left the shoelace style cord that came with it on it. I did however take additional Paracord both gutted and non and wrapped the sheath in a few strategic places that could possibly fail for both reinforcement, easier & safer extraction and insertion of the knife, and other obvious reasons. I, as some other people have done, sewed the velcro strap that holds the blade in the sheath to prevent cutting the straps inadvertantly (Gorilla Glue works nicely as well). Overall. nice package & love this little knife. Probably more of a camp knife for me from now on, but think about it, which knife do you use more when in the bush anyway? I just wanted to test it the right way. Remember that the sheath has many flaws but is extremely modifiable. $28.00 shipped? Nice baby! ### ⭐⭐ OK, but not truly good for survival. *by S***Y on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on September 29, 2011* I like testing my knives before taking them out on the town and using them. Am even more thorough when its a supposed survival knife and my well-being could depend on it. Left it outside overnight in the rain with a bunch of other survival and utility knives. This one was by far the most rusted after 8 hours. I know you aren't supposed to leave a knife out in the rain all night but for something called a Survival Knife I think it should be able to handle a minimum amount of abuse like that. But the Dajo did worse than all my other blades including some dirt cheap folders made of crummy materials. The Ontario survival knife was also a rust magnet but it still did better than the Dajo.I know it looks sleek but keep in mind if you ever get stuck in a real survival situation for days on end, this blade will oxidize very fast and that means weaknesses when you are trying to use it. It is low weight and easy to carry & handle. That's nice for lightening your load when running around all day on an uneventful trip. While mine did not arrive very sharp it is easy to put a good edge on it and it will hold for some light work, but if you plan on building a lean-to and a fire and maybe one spear for keeping the wolves away, this little guy will need to be sharpened quite a bit. This means in an emergency you better hope you had more than just the knife strapped to your leg when you were cut off from your supplies. Also keep a small survival kit with a sharpener of your choice. Its a little too light to be used for chopping and won't keep an edge too long so I don't believe this is designed to be your be-all, end-all tool against the wilderness. The hollow handle with 6 holes is supposed to facilitate making a spear but I think if you found a piece of wood that sturdy it would be smarter to just sharpen the end to a point and save your knife for more utility work.Sheath is OK but as others have said its kinda bulky for such a lean, sleek blade. The extra cord can be used for lots of things but I think they were hoping you would strap the sheath to your leg so it wouldn't flop around. As short as it is, I don't see that being an issue. Theres a nice rubber insert so you don't punch the blade through easily and I think it also protects from rain, which is good considering how easily it rusts.The fire steel is a genuine name brand Light My Fire, and it works incredibly well. The special notch on the back is perfectly shaped to make plenty of nice bright sparks.Whistle is nice but I think in a genuine survival situation (cut off from friends and supplies) I think I would have preferred something else in there to help me take care of myself. Like I said before its not the ultimate survival knife. Based on the price, metal quality and included extras I think the idea is to give this to family members and hope to god you are in ear shot if they wander off the path and get lost. If they cant find you, they have the ability to make fire easily, and its generally considered better to have heat than most other things in a rough situation. Food will not counteract hypothermia but if you have some fat on your body you can endure a while provided the elements don't get to you.For me I think I'd prefer to have either a smaller sheath and just the knife, and carry a tiny survival kit on my belt with stuff I will actually need.OR, a much larger sheath with more places to stuff junk I will actually need to survive. Either one of those choices would make this a better carry item.I had to rate this knife low because it just isn't a proper survival tool, and that's how its being advertised. It is a fine fixed blade knife for camping and keeping less experienced survivalists safe while you find them, but all by themselves they'd be in trouble with just the Dajo. Find a better knife and kit if you plan on surviving alone for a while. It is however, a very good deal for the money especially with a name brand fire steel. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Praktisches Messer mit einigen Gimmicks *by K***R on Reviewed in Germany 🇩🇪 on December 5, 2013* Meinem Vorrezensenten kann ich nur zustimmmen.Das Messer ist bei Auslieferung wirklich beeindruckend scharf, hätte ich so nicht erwartet.Die Signalpfeife ist nicht so laut, mancher pfeift zwischen zwei Fingern lauter. Der Feuerstahl der Firma "Light my Fire" zündet (nach Entfernung der schwarzen Schutzschicht) gut. Er ist nur sehr klein und dünn (dünner als der beim "Mora Light my Fire" im Griff eingearbeitete, so dass er bei mir nur für den Fall zum Einsatz kommt, dass ich meinen großen Feuerstahl zu Hause vergessen habe (genauso wie bei meinem Mora Light my Fire).Signalpfeife und Feuerstahl sind hier also meiner Meinung nach nur nützliche Gimmicks.Wer regelmäßig mit Feuerstahl Feuer macht, dem sei sowieso empfohlen, sich einen großen Feuerstahl extra zu besorgen.Wirklich ein EDC (every day carrying) Messer.Einen Punkt zieh ich für die Nylonscheide ab, weil die Schlaufen zur senkrechten und waagrechten Befestigung am Gürtel kein Teil der Scheide, sondern nur mit einer Bahn daran mit angenäht sind. Die beiden Seiten der Schlaufen sind mit Gewebekrepp versehen und man kann sie öffnen. Da hierdurch immer wieder Zug auf die Naht kommt, habe ich Bedenken, ob das auf die Dauer hält.Hätte man die Schlaufen länger gemacht, um sie mit mehreren Bahnen zu vernähen, oder gleich von Anfang an als Teil der Scheide angefertigt, hätte ich diese Bedenken nicht. Die Zukunft wird zeigen, ob ich recht habe. Wenn nicht, werde ich die Bewertung ändern.Update: Wieder die Messerscheide betreffend.
