Yes they are completely white. There is absolutely no color, wording or logo of any kind. The stitching on the toe is white too.

are they very tight around the calf and ankle?

"very tight" is relative description and tight to one person may not be to another. They are tighter than for example the diabetic socks sold by Walmart. Not as tight as many other currently available cotton blend sport socks I tried. I believe they are a bit tighter on the calf than the original socks sold at Costco.
