GasOne Store: 15.000BTU Portable Butane or Propane Stove w/Piezo Ignition, Windscreen & Polymer Case This product is a GasOne Model GS-3900PB portable butane or propane powered single burner gas stove. I just received this product late today and I had some time this evening, so I grabbed a can of butane and a propane cylinder to give it a try. The product is provided with a polymer case for storage and transport and an “Instructions Manual” for reference. BUTANE: The GasOne Model GS-3900PB stove utilizes the 250g (nominal) tall butane disposable cylinders as one of its possible fuel sources. These cylinders are also referred to as butane cartridges, cassettes, or canisters and I have no idea why, they just are. Special Note: A smaller version of this butane cylinder or cassette product is also available containing 4.25-ounces or 120 grams (e.g., the Iwatani Cassette Junior product) of butane. However, this type of butane cylinder cannot be used in this stove because it is too short to work with the cylinder lock mechanism. PROPANE: The GasOne Model GS-3900PB stove may also utilize a one-pound propane cylinder to fuel the stove. The stove may use the disposable or the refillable one-pound propane cylinders at the user’s discretion. To use a propane cylinder, the user must first install the propane cylinder adapter to the stove. The propane cylinder is then attached to the propane adapter and from there, the operation of the stove is exactly the same. The Case The GasOne Model GS-3900PB stove is delivered in a polymer case. I was very surprised by the quality of this case. It is much more substantial than any other case I have ever seen for use with a portable butane stove. This case is made from a grey polymer (I believe that it is made from High Density Polyethylene – HDPE) and it is substantial. I have seen some cases where the polymer making up the case was so thin it only had one side! This case is strong and rigid. It is made with two true hinges instead of the commonly seen self-hinge arrangement. This case also has two sliding latches to secure the case closed. The case is specifically designed to hold this butane stove and it holds the stove securely – there is no moving around of the stove inside of this case. The case has a built-in handle that is sufficiently large even for my hands and the handle is solid – I does not feel like it will fall off any second. The case is a superior solution to the task of storing, transporting and protecting this butane stove. The Stove The GasOne Model GS-3900PB stove is impressive. The first thing I noticed was the quality of the sheet metal the stove was made of, the quality of the design of the stove, and the execution of the stamping process used to form the pieces of sheet metal into the stove itself. There is no bending, flexing, or rattling of this butane stove like that of many other stoves with a similar purpose. The finish on the stove is excellent. I found no sharp edges on any of the sheet metal pieces used to build the stove. The stove has a very nicely designed and extraordinarily effective wind screen. With this stove model, the windscreen is a separate item that must be installed onto the body of the stove before use. This windscreen and pot support are a single piece and are very nicely made and finished. The finish is a black porcelain coating that should be impervious long-term to the heat produced by the stove’s burner. This stove uses a flip open door on the right side of the stove to cover the area where the butane cylinder is installed and the propane adapter is also attached. The door simply flips open for installation and removal of the butane cylinder fuel source. This door must be closed when the cylinder is installed and the stove is being used. This stove uses a mechanical latch mechanism to lock the butane cylinder into the butane regulator. The lever for this mechanism is located on the front of the stove to the left of the rotary heat control and piezo igniter. It is simply pressed down to lock the butane cylinder into place, once the cylinder is correctly inserter into the butane regulator. The rotary heat control is located on the right front corner of the stove. This control also contains the piezo igniter mechanism. When the stove is to be lighted, the rotary heat control knob must be fully rotated counterclockwise (about a 180° motion). This motion will open the gas valve which allows the butane gas to flow to the stove’s burner and then the piezo unit will operate with a click and provide a spark to ignite the gas flowing from the burner. If for some reason the burner does not light, the rotary heat control knob may be rotated just slightly counterclockwise again to provide another spark at the burner. If the burner cannot be lighted, the rotary heat control knob should be rotated fully clockwise to turn off the butane gas flow and the problem then investigated. Once the burner is lighted, the rotary heat control knob can then be adjusted to obtain the flame level and heat output desired for the task to be performed. This stove also has a specially designed, heat conducting panel to provide a small amount of heat from the burner unit to a position underneath the butane cylinder. The need for this heat is to prevent a precipitous drop in butane gas pressure when using the stove on a high setting for an extended period of time, particularly when that usage is under colder ambient conditions. By warming the butane cylinder, the butane gas pressure is maintained at a useable level and there is no need to replace a butane cylinder because it has gotten too cold to supply sufficient gas pressure. When it is desired to use propane fuel to power the stove, the user must first install the propane adapter unit. The propane adapter unit has two parts. The first part screws into the fuel inlet and provides a place for the second part, the propane pressure regulator to be attached. To install the propane adapter, the user must first remove the butane cylinder, if one is present. Then the fuel inlet adapter, the first part, is properly oriented with the Notch aligned with the Safety Guide. The attachment wheel on the fuel inlet adapter is then screwed into place until tight. The fuel door may then be closed and the threaded propane connector will then extend through the hole in the fuel door side. The brass connector on the propane pressure regulator assembly is then inserted into the threaded propane connector and tightened. Please note that the brass connector is keyed to fit into a very specific orientation relative to the stove. Do not try to bend the tube connecting the regulator to the brass connector. Next, the plastic inlet protector is unscrewed from the regulator and carefully stored for return to the regulator after use. The one-pound propane cylinder is then screwed into the regulator in preparation for use. One the cylinder is tightened, the starting process for the stove is exactly the same. Special Note: The one-pound propane cylinder is tilted at an angle when attached to the regulator. This is its normal orientation. One of the best, and truly surprising features of this stove is the potential heat output from the stove’s burner. This stove’s burner is rated for an output of up to 15,000 BTUs (4,400W). This is most unusual since the vast majority of the single burner butane-powered or propane-powered stoves on the market max out at about 10,000 BTUs (2,930W). There are exceptions to this relatively low heat output, for example the Iwatani 35FW stove which also is rated at 15,000 BTUs. The consequence of this stove having the 15,000 BTU output rating is that the user can heat a cast iron pan up to a proper temperature to be able to actually sear a steak instead just steaming it. This incredible heat output can also be used to boil a large pot of water for making pasta, cooking seafood such as shrimp or crabs, or for use in canning and food preservation tasks such as when reducing jelly or jam. Naturally, the heat output is fully adjustable from a very small flame for keeping something just warm to preparing to sear that Porterhouse steak. There is very little difference in the heat output of the burner when using butane vs. propane. I did find one note in the product’s “Instructions Manual” the indicates that the heat output on propane is 13,500BTU while the heat output on butane is 15,000BTU. The heat output of burning butane is higher per gallon (by volume), while propane is higher per pound (by weight). Propane also burns at a higher flame temperature. That said, the energy provided is very similar between the two fuels. The energy, in Kilojoules/gram is ~46 kJ/g for propane (C3H8) and ~49.5 kJ/g for butane (C4H10). Lastly, the safety mechanisms built into this stove are impressive. This stove is approved by the CSA organization which approves designs for use in Canada and the United States. The stove also incorporates in its design a mechanism whereby the butane cylinder will be automatically be ejected from the butane regulator should the system detect an inappropriate rise in the pressure of the butane cylinder indicative of a problem. As I said before, I am truly impressed with is product. Its 15,000 BTU heat output is exactly what I wanted and needed. It is very well made and very safe. The case provided with the stove is exceptional. After enduring two hurricanes last year, I wanted a dual-fuel stove to be able to actually cook on when I have no electricity and not have to try to cook everything on a propane grill or charcoal hibachi. This stove is a great piece of kit. If you decide to get one, you will not regret your purchase.

Very happy with this stove, GasOne have done an excellent job. It's surprisingly very well built for the money. The features this stove has for the price is nice, the gas adustment is full to only just burning along with the inbuilt wind gard gives flexibility when cooking. The dual fuel aspect is useful as butane don't like the cold, ( the stove has a healing strip to help keep the gas cartridge from getting cold giving more runtime with butane in some conditions) propane will work in the lower temperatures so you'll get your cooking done regardless. The gas adapter and regulator is included. The rubber feet help stop the stove moving around.

This unit performs exactly as described. Water boils in just a few minutes. I cooked three different dishes today and it worked great on both high and low settings for about an hour and a half with fuel to spare! It is well made and exceeded my expectations!

Recommended...solid material used and size is also good

This is an important item in my trip! This item is on the heavy side at just over 4 pounds. However, I am taking a 12 yr old boy into the wilderness, and did not want to be responsible for starting the next forest fire because the stove tipped over while cooking breakfast, just because we wanted to save a few ounces of weight. So erroring on the safe side, we went with a bigger and more conventional style burner, something the kid is more familiar with! However. when the item arrived and we took it out of the box, we were immediately disappointed to notice that the plastic case that holds the stove was not properly put together. The hinges were not put together at all in fact. What was worse, one of the locking clips to the case is broken. The case will not stay closed properly. this is a little bit of a problem for us on our trip as we were hoping to keep everything nice and tidy. With the case slightly open, things rattle a bit more then normal. This will allow water and the outside environment to ingress into the case and stove when not in use. This is not acceptable! I would have given 5 stars but with a broken case latch, I just cant. The stove appears to be of working order, I have yet to get fuel for it and test. Another item noted was the cover for the butane fuel canister is a bit warped and doesn't close completely. This is a cosmetic issue not a functional issue. We believe the flame and heat of 15k BTU will be plenty. This stove ought to be able to cook any meal in short order! It has a nice size burner, comparable to that of the standard stove top that will accommodate most any size skillet or pot. I have not had the opportunity to test the burn rate to know how fast this is going to burn through fuel to boil water or cook a meal. I considered other stoves of similar style. However they were of lessor BTU output, and time and effort are of importance to a bikepacker and hiker, even if it is heavy! The cost was was not that much more for what we were getting. We will attempt to give a better review within the next 4 months as we put this product through daily use on a multistate back country bikepacking trip. Wish us luck!

I just bought it recently, so I can't speak to durability yet. It seems solidly built. It started right up on a windy afternoon and brought a good sized pot of water to a hard boil shockingly fast on Kovea butane/propane mix. The wind shield is a nice feature. Seems like a great buy.

Best stove I ever had!!

This burner does exactly what it is made to do. It sets up quickly, is extremely portable and lightweight, and allows you to take a cooking option with you, wherever you go. Turning the unit on is a easy as flipping a switch to lock the bottle in place and turning the self-lighting burner to the flame height that you want...takes seconds. The flame is strong, and gets any cooking surface hot in seconds. The unit comes in its own carry case. The design is compact, well thought out, and a great value for your money.

good for price; difficult to regulate low heat

Didn't try with butane as the point was to use it for propane. The propane pipe is too fragile, should have come with a flexible hose to connect to a 1lb propane. To make it even worse, GasOne can't even say what the fitting is to replace the propane pipe with a flexible hose, and refuses to advise on any hose that would connect to a 20lb propane tank without the fragile pipe thing. To top it off, can't return it. What a waste.
