Does this work on tires with a wire bead?

I do not have tires with wired beads. However on the tires that I use the piece of equipment works just fine. I do have some tires that I had trouble getting off in he past soo I practiced on them to see it it would work. I now have it it my pack when I ride. I have a bike with regular tires and tubeless tires. Regulators YES... Tubeless No!! Hope this helps

Is one sufficient for tire dismounting, or are two required? At $16 for 1, when a set of tire irons cost $5, this would be very expensive.

No, imo this tool is not good for tire REMOVAL, but it's great for installing difficult tires. So... if you don't have trouble mounting tires, then you're better off with old fashioned tire levers. BUT... if you sometimes have trouble installing (I use Gatorskins on tubeless compatible rims, so yeah) then this tool is very handy to have. If you've ever been stuck at the side of the road wrestling with a tire, then $16 seems worth it. This tool can mount a tire alone without having to juggle tire levers. I carry it and tire levers too. Use levers to remove, Tyre Glider to install.
