This was a very good book with a clever and dark ending
Son Of Slappy shows Stine back at one of his finest talents. At the start of the story the readers meet Jackson Stander and his younger sister Rachel. Jackson is depicted as "the good" kid who always tries his hardest to do his best at everything. Rachel, on the other hand is a whole another matter as she's shown to be Jackson's opposite in every way and thus has earned herself the lable as being "the troubled kid" of the family. So as the readers soon discover, Rachel and Jackson don't get along very well and during a trip to their Grandfather's house they find-out that their grandfather has come into possesion of owning a supposed copy of the evil dummy, Slappy. Not long afterward, Jackson discovers that Slappy has come home with them. The pair are strongly warned of Slappy's evil ways and of his strong domineering personality, but seeing as how the dummy in their postion is just a copy, don't heed the warings. Shortly there afterward choas ensues when the two accidentally bring Slappy to life. After coming back to life, Slappy proves his awesome power and that the stories around him are true by hypnotizing Jackson into falling under his control. Slappy believes that by hypnotizing Jackson, he will lead Jackson down the path into becoming a great and twisted villian, like himself. Slappy even starts to view Jackson as his successor, his son. In my opion if this book were to get a letter grade, it would be a strong "B+" (from me) and on a scale of one to ten with one as the worest and ten as the best, this would be a strong eight becuase the story is a strong one which does hold the reader's attention very well. Slappy is woken up earlier than normal which leads to some great craziness and he even gets in a few more really good lines some of which describe how he truly feels about his evil ways. Futhermore, while the story is shown from Jackson's point of view (p.o.v.) it does occasionally sympathize with Rachel as there is one instance when Slappy first starts his crazy ways she just looks completely shocked, innocent and scared of what's about to happen. This is also a good Goosebumps story that shows how lables can effect kids lives as Jackson is shown to be "the good kid" and Rachel is seen as "the troubled kid". The lables in the story have made me wonder about what would have happened if Jackson tried harder to see that Rachel was actually a good kid who just needed some more help then he did becuase some kids need more guidance than others. This doesn't mean that they are bad kids, they just need someone to point them out in the right drection, but then again if that happened then we wouldn't have gotten the rich ending to this book. Despite all of these good points, the book also does have a few minor flaws. For example Slappy's love of being evil could have had a couple more strong lines. Plus, the book would have been a little more engaging if Jackson demonstrated some more willpower over himself when Slappy tried to control him. That would have made for a more intersting dynamic between him and Slappy with Slappy saying that fighting him would be pointless, but Jackson still should have tried anyway which would have risen Slappy's anger more and more. Lastly the ending, as good as it was could have been a bit longer and that's all I'm going to say on that topic. Otherwise, it's a very good book and if you love Slappy and how he opperates, then you're more than likely to eiather like this book or really like this book, but as mentioned before from this reader's perspective, it's a "B+" type of book which is very good, but it's not awesome and on a scale of one to ten with one as the worest and ten as the best, this would be a solid eight (from me). Recommanded for readers ages nine and up.

I've always loved the goosebumps books, particularly ones with slappy, and I was happy to see that this book sticks to original concept, while still putting a nice twist on the story. It's also nice to see R.L. Stines still making goosebumps books at the same amazing quality he has for all these years. I would recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of the original series, however if you haven't read the original Night of the Living Dummy, read that first as this book puts a somewhat dark twist on the original.
