Very substantial
Wow, this is one serious piece of rock. In hindsight, I should have ordered the smaller size. I got the large (5.6'') dark marble version. It looks fantastic, and I like the modern style, so different from the typical "same as they've always been since the Bronze Age" mortar and pestle look. This thing is kind of the ultimate in mortar and pestles. I almost feel like I could grind up concrete in this thing. I like that it has a shallow side, which with the wider, flatter end of the pestle will be good for things like coriander and cumin seed and such. If your goal is more toward guacamole and masa usage instead of spice-grinder, you probably do want the large version, but in the granite, which is rougher, more toward a traditional molcajete. Though if you're all about guac and masa, you should probably just get an actual molcajete. Mine arrived without any damage. Unlike some prior reviewers, I got one that did not have any glue-patched cracks. I guess the manufacturer has stopped doing that in response to complaints, or I just got lucky. The box included a note to contact the mfr. for an immediate replacement if it arrives damaged. You just supply them a picture of the broken part. I would surmise you don't have to send it back to them. However, if you get one with a glued crack, I don't know if they'll respond the same way, and you might have to do an Amazon return if you don't trust the factory repair they did. Anyway, this IS natural stone; it will have some irregularities and imperfections. However, I find the grinding surfaces on each side of each tool to be even, effective, and exactly what I expected. This is definitely a gift-quality piece, appropriate for someone who cooks (for real, from scratch) a lot and for a family, and who is not arthritic or otherwise weakened, since this is a large, heavy piece. For a little ol' granny, or someone living alone in an apartment, a mortar and pestle half this size would be quite sufficient. If you need one for grinding medications, not for (or not just for) cooking, then get a steel one, since medicines should not get into food, but a stone m&p will retain some since it's porous at the microscopic level.

Great Item! Love!
The Laevo White Marble Mortar and Pestle Set (Large) is an exceptional kitchen tool that combines functionality with elegance. The marble construction is not only aesthetically pleasing but also incredibly durable. The solid weight of the mortar provides stability, making grinding spices, herbs, and even tougher ingredients like nuts and garlic a breeze. The pestle is comfortable to hold and has just the right heft to make crushing and grinding effortless. One of the standout features of this set is its versatility; it’s perfect for creating everything from spice blends to homemade pastes and sauces. The marble material is also easy to clean, and it doesn’t absorb odors or flavors, ensuring that your ingredients remain pure. The large size is perfect for preparing generous amounts, whether you're cooking for a family or a dinner party. This mortar and pestle set is a must-have for anyone serious about cooking.

Perfect addition for any chef!
This is an awesome piece of kitchen equipment. It has two different bowls within the same block of stone which allows you to grind up spices using different methods. The pestle is a great weight and allows for smooth grinding motions. Pros: Well Made Coarse enough to grind down all spices Not to large that it becomes a pain to move around Rubber mat is useful and keeps the product in place Looks great on a counter top Cons: Nothing really to complain about here. Overall it is an awesome product at a reasonable price!

First mortar/pestle, good start
This being my first mortar and pestle, I can't testify to ease of use and such. But while I'm still hyped on receiving it, I'm gonna discuss the things I like and, over time I will be putting this to the test. A lot. Since I've read some people get a few months down the road and then disaster strikes, I will be keen to come back and update. What I personally like, that seems to set this apart from others I've seen, is while there's that extra, small, shallow mortar on the bottom (unique by itself) I like that they made the edge of that rough. It IS still a base, after all. But they could have went and polished it like the exterior of the main bowl, thus making it more flashy, so I respect them making it rough. The little spoon is cute, and I'm sure I'll find a use. And while I can get infinite recipes online, it is always pleasant to find one in the box. A quick reference on the corkboard in the kitchen can be a lifesaver. Now I will say this pestle seems to have a more rounded tip (on the side you use in the main bowl). I can't say how this will work, but it seems like it might make round ingredients difficult. This is something I'll have to test, though other reviewers say this works swell for peppercorn.

Great
Although I've owned/used the same Krups electric spice grinder for decades, I've always yearned for an "old fashioned" mortar & pestle. Did some internet research. This one from Laevo Cook seems to fit the bill. It was promptly delivered in tact. It looks good, the dark gray granite body with the etched leaf topped and bottomed by the lighter granite. Timeless design? It is heavy & sturdy. Same with the pestle although someone with large hands might find it short. The silicone lid is great; it creates an air tight seal. The small wooden spoon is a must have. Very good quality at a reasonable price. Over a two day period I cured both bowls (rice, then garlic, cumin, kosher salt) twice. Washed with water, air dried. Then it was time for a simple guacamole. Scrunched up a little chopped white onion, jalapeno, cilantro, & sea salt into a paste. Scrunched in some lime juice. Mashed in the chopped flesh of one avocado. Chopped up & stirred in with the small wooden spoon one small deseeded plum tomato from my garden. Adjusted with sea salt & fresh ground black pepper. Voila! Over the next two hours, my white corn tortilla chips & I made repeated trips to that mortar bowl on the kitchen table. The silicone lid created an airtight seal; the guacamole didn't brown. The small wooden spoon came in handy for scraping out the last bit of guac. I've already purchased a replacement avocado. Basil pesto is on deck. Con: The larger bowl is @ 4.5" wide x 2.25" deep. That will likely be sufficient to grind spices for most recipes. But for guacamole, pestos, salsas, etc. for more than one or two people, you'll want a larger mortar & pestle. Pro: It's a keeper! I'll just buy a traditional lava molcajete for the larger jobs.

Impressive. Very solid and useful item
I love this mortar and pestle. It was packaged well and it is impressively large and in charge. It has two mortar "zones". One is large and you simply flip it over to use the smaller bowl. The pestle is similarly two-sided and you can use whichever end suits the particular purpose at hand. It also comes with a circular rubber/silicone pad that prevents the mortar from slipping. It's made of solid granite and I'm confident it will outlast me. It also looks great sitting on the counter. It weighs 2750 grams (6 lbs, 1 oz) so it's pretty solid. The pestle weighs 625 grams (1 lb, 6 ozs) so be careful not to drop it on your toes!

Splurged a little and got this little beauty
Arrived in perfect condition, in 3 days to Hawaii, so that’s great. It is smaller than expected, but it's so heavy, that’s actually a good thing...if it were any bigger, I would have a hard time handling it. At 69, my hands aren't as strong as they used too be. It's so pretty, I love it. I came with extras, a cute little wooden spoon that works surprisingly well to scoop out dried herbs and other things and a little silicone mat to keep the molcajeté from moving around or scratching your counter. However, it's very smooth so I don't believe it would scratch anything. I've only used it on dried Mexican Oregano, so far, but it works very well in helping one achieve their desired coarseness for their dish. Sometimes you need a spice or herb coarse, medium or finely ground and this will accomplish all that. It says the larger end holds 2.1 cups, but mine only held about 1.75 cups of water, to the absolute very top. I don't see that being a problem. It's well made, pretty and I am very happy with it. I highly recommend it.

Awesome!
I debated for months about purchasing this because of the price. Ended up buying the granite mortar and pestle 5 months ago and I'm happy I did. It is really sturdy, heavy, big, it looks beautiful, grinds smooth and takes less time/effort than my wooden kit. I even pounded rice in it with a wooden pestle (don't use the granite pestle for pounding, you might break something). Awesome purchase!

Mortar and pestle
This is an expensive mortar and pestle but performance is so good you soon forget the price and enjoy the quality of a product that will last a lifetime. The mortar has two sides one shallow and the other deeper and the pestle has two ends one with a wider head, so can be used for making pastes or just grinding down spices etc. It comes with a rubber mat to protect a work surface and allows the mortar to be held confidently.
