a quick boost at the aid station
These are a must on long runs and races. I love the new flavors but you must have water available. They have never upset my stomach, give me energy and help me to maintain my blood sugar.

Great for bike rides!
I love eating one of these before a bike ride! I've taken rides where I forget to eat a Gu pack before and I can feel I don't have as much energy or stamina. Maybe it's just a mental trick, but I know they work for me! The flavor is really good. I have a sweet tooth though, so maybe the texture would be off putting to some people that don't crave sweets like I do. Each pack is nice and portable so you can bring one with you on longer rides to have mid-way. I haven't noticed any changes to how my digestion works, so I don't have any issues with that. Maybe people that are sensitive to sweets might have a problem? I haven't noticed any side effects. I usually notice something from caffeine, but there must not be enough in these to affect me.

Also good for diabetics
Been a type 1 for 31 years. Had all the highs, all the lows, ate all the chalky glucose tabs and powder mix's to raise sugars. Sure, i can carry around a soda and a few swigs would bring my BG back up, but these packets are small enough to put in a pocket and have enough carbs to raise me up without the risk of getting too high, plus the benefits of an energy supplement. Comes in handy on long motorcycle rides, having a day trip at the zoo in the summer heat, and saved me and another cub scout at camp. Plus, i like the pudding texture and flavors are excellent.

These work great - but be careful with leaking packages
This stuff is fantastic. Tastes great. Easy to ingest. Gives almost instant and sustained energy. Not too much caffeine. There's no sugar rush - the impact seems to last a good 30 - 45 minutes, depending on the level of exertion. I didn't ever get the jitters. I would alternate one of these and the Gu Endurance Energy Drink and water. This was my first, but definitely not the last time using these. I used these on a 500-mile ride over 7 days. I tried to stay ahead of the bonk. I didn't want to overdo it. But as soon as I felt my power level drop or a knew there was a big hill, I would tear one of these open and squeeze it into my mouth. It tastes delicious - like a dessert or a liquid candybar. It would take 5 to 10 minutes to kick in. But when it did BAM! My riding partners could notice the impact. When I would sprint to the front of the paceline, they'd say "He must have had another Gu." YES, I DID! LET'S GOOOOO! I also used the Gu Roctane Endurance Energy Drink (both with and without caffeine), Gu stroopwafels, and the Gu Roctane Protein Recovery. It's all that I would consume until dinner. This combo was enough to sustain me every day when riding and left me feeling great. The only thing that I wasn't happy about was that a few of the packages leaked. I wish I figured that out before I was on my trip. Fortunately, I kept them in a Ziploc bag, so the mess was contained. Still, my fingers and feedbag got gooey and sticky every day. The good news is that it washes easily with water. Even with the leakers, I still give this 5 stars.

Great for Running
I love this variety pack! I have also tried out other Gu gels but this is one of my favorites because I'm a chocolate girl at heart. I was surprised by how good the vanilla and coffee ones tasted! I also like a little bit of caffine to give me a boost mid run. I like the gel consistency and the tear-away top makes it easy to eat while running. I have definitely re-purchased and recommended to other friends!

Great amount of energy for the size, but texture a little thick
I love the flavor. Really tasted like chocolate, but it is a bit thick to swallow. I feel like you HAVE to have water or your mouth feels super dry. But i mean its still eatable if youre not too picky. they do give a lot pf energy though

GU Original Energy Gels: Apparently Eating Goo From a Tiny Packet Is Actually Pretty Brilliant!
I'll admit it. The first time I really looked at an energy gel, part of my brain thought: “So we're just eating flavored goo now?” Yes. Yes, apparently we are. And after actually using GU Original Energy Gels for the purpose they were designed for, I completely understand why. These aren't meal replacements. They aren't protein bars. They aren't supposed to keep you full until dinner. They have one very specific job: Give you a quick, portable source of carbohydrates when your body is working and stopping for actual food isn't particularly convenient. For that job? I'm impressed. First, what exactly is an energy gel? Basically, it's concentrated sports nutrition in a tiny packet. GU Original Energy Gels provide approximately 100 calories and 21–23 grams of carbohydrates per packet, depending on the flavor. They also contain 60–125 mg of sodium and 450 mg of amino acids, and some flavors contain caffeine. That means there's considerably more going on inside that tiny packet than “sweet goo.” The carbohydrates are there to provide fuel during physical activity. GU uses a combination of carbohydrate sources rather than relying on just one. The sodium provides an electrolyte that is lost through sweat. And GU includes amino acids as part of its sports-nutrition formula. Most importantly, it's all packaged in something small enough to put just about anywhere. Pocket. Bag. Backpack. Gear. Anywhere you can stash what basically amounts to an emergency packet of “please keep functioning.” And this is exactly why I bought them. I wasn't looking for something to replace a meal. That's what the meal bars were for. I was trying to solve a completely different problem: What happens when someone is doing physically demanding activity, needs additional fuel, and cannot simply stop everything and sit down with a sandwich? That's where these became extremely useful. They were incorporated into a much larger fueling and recovery system that included actual meals, meal bars, protein, hydration, electrolytes and recovery nutrition. The GU gels had a very specific place in that system. Quick fuel during periods of high physical demand. And I think understanding that distinction is important before buying them. If you're hungry for lunch, please eat lunch. Do not stare at this tiny packet and expect it to transform itself into a turkey sandwich. It has limitations. The portability is probably my favorite feature. These things are TINY. You can carry several without taking up much room at all. There's nothing to refrigerate. Nothing to prepare. No utensils. No chewing required. Rip it open, eat it, drink some water, and keep moving. For running, cycling, hiking, long training sessions, physically demanding jobs or other situations where carrying normal food isn't always practical, I can absolutely see the appeal. And in our real-world use, that convenience mattered. When you're trying to build a nutrition system that someone can actually follow during a demanding day, the theoretically perfect food is completely useless if there's no practical opportunity to eat it. Sometimes the best option is the one somebody can actually consume. Now let's discuss the texture. It's a gel. I feel like we need to establish reasonable expectations here. If you're expecting the texture of a chocolate mousse lovingly prepared by a French pastry chef, I would like to gently redirect you toward the dessert section. This is concentrated sports fuel. The texture is thick. Different flavors can feel and taste slightly different, and personal preference is going to play a HUGE role here. Some people are going to love certain flavors. Other people will try the exact same flavor and immediately begin negotiating with their taste buds. That's precisely why I like buying a variety pack first. Don't commit yourself to an entire box of one flavor before you know whether the two of you are compatible. Try them. Find your favorites. Then buy accordingly. Something else you need to know: caffeine varies by flavor. This is important. Not every GU Original Energy Gel contains caffeine. Some flavors do. Some don't. And the amount can vary. So please don't grab three random packets, eat them back-to-back and then discover that you've accidentally consumed considerably more caffeine than you intended. Read the packet. Especially if you're sensitive to caffeine, already consuming coffee or other caffeinated products, taking medications where caffeine matters, or using several gels during a long activity. “It's just an energy gel” is not an excuse to stop reading labels. You also still need water. This is concentrated nutrition. GU's own fueling guidance recommends taking water along with its gels. And that makes sense. A packet may contain electrolytes, but that does NOT mean it replaces hydration. You still need to drink. Think of the gel and water as teammates rather than competitors. One provides concentrated fuel. The other keeps you from attempting to run your body like a houseplant someone forgot to water. What I especially liked was being able to use these strategically. Rather than randomly eating one whenever somebody felt tired, they could be incorporated into a planned fueling routine. That's where I think sports nutrition products make considerably more sense. You aren't waiting until the body is completely depleted and then screaming: “QUICK! FIND THE GOO!” You're anticipating the demand. Food beforehand. Hydration. Electrolytes as appropriate. Additional carbohydrates during prolonged or demanding activity. Recovery nutrition afterward. The gel is one tool in the system. And when we used it that way, it worked very well for what we needed. Did the overall system work? Very well. We tracked how the entire nutrition and recovery routine was performing over time rather than simply guessing. Energy, recovery and how the body felt after demanding days all improved significantly as the system was refined. Just like with the other products in that routine, however, I'm not going to claim: “GU Energy Gel caused all of that.” It didn't operate in isolation. There were multiple things being deliberately managed at the same time. What I CAN say is that these gels filled their particular role extremely well. When quick, portable energy was needed during physical activity, they provided an easy way to get carbohydrates without stopping for a conventional snack or meal. That's exactly why I bought them. That's exactly what I needed them to do. Are these only for marathon runners? No. And I think the word “sports” on the package can make people assume you need to be standing at Mile 22 of the Boston Marathon before you're legally permitted to open one. You don't. They're designed as fuel for physical activity. Running and cycling are obvious examples, but hiking, endurance events, long training sessions and other sustained physical activity can create the same basic problem: Your muscles need fuel, and carrying a cheeseburger in your pocket presents certain logistical challenges. The important part is understanding what the product actually provides. This is primarily carbohydrate-based energy for activity. It's not a balanced meal. It's not a substitute for normal nutrition. And if you're sitting on the couch watching television, you probably don't need an elaborate sports-fueling strategy to survive the commercial break. Would I buy them again? Absolutely. They solved the exact problem I purchased them to solve. They're tiny. They're portable. They're incredibly easy to carry. They provide a predictable amount of carbohydrate. There are caffeinated and non-caffeinated options. And they can be used without interrupting whatever physical activity you're doing for very long. That's an enormous amount of practicality packed into something roughly the size of a condiment packet. A very determined condiment packet. My recommendation if you've never tried energy gels before? Buy the variety pack. Taste is simply too subjective for me to tell you which flavor you're going to love. Try several. Pay attention not only to flavor but also to texture and whether you prefer caffeinated or non-caffeinated options. And PLEASE try them during training or normal activity before deciding you're going to rely on them during an important race, event or extremely demanding day. Your stomach deserves an introduction before entering into a long-term relationship. Bottom line I bought GU Original Energy Gels because I needed a quick, compact and practical way to add carbohydrates during periods of significant physical activity. And they did exactly that. They weren't expected to replace meals. They weren't expected to magically eliminate fatigue. They were one carefully selected piece of a larger fueling and recovery system and within that system, they performed their job extremely well. I also appreciate that GU provides the nutritional information necessary to actually plan their use rather than treating “energy” as some mysterious substance contained inside a shiny packet. You know approximately how many calories you're getting. You know how many carbohydrates you're getting. You can see the sodium. You can check whether your flavor contains caffeine. That means you can use them deliberately rather than randomly. Would I recommend them? Yes. Do your own research. Read the labels. Pay attention to caffeine. Drink water with them. Figure out which flavors your particular taste buds are willing to accept. And use them for what they actually are: a remarkably convenient little packet of fuel when stopping for real food isn't practical. I still think “flavored goo” is a reasonably accurate physical description. I just have considerably more respect for the goo now.

Expiration Date
I was fascinated and also skeptical before buying this item due to other buyers experience of short expiry date for the item. Bought it during sale and to my surprise expiry date is one year and 3 months.

Outstanding energy!
They work fast and taste good. I am so impressed with this product. Some energy powders I’ve tried make me feel unwell. Feel jittery and get heartburn from them. These energy gels make me feel like exercising and I feel great! No heartburn and no unpleasant side effects at all!! Honestly the best I’ve tried. I’ve tried many!
