Markets of Paris, 2nd Edition: Food, Antiques, Crafts, Books, and More

I just returned from a trip to Paris where I put this incredible book to good use. I spent a week there - some time with a friend, some time on my own, and some time with my son who was studying abroad and joined me for a few days. I put the book through its paces by visiting a different Parisian market each day of the week and organized my Paris exploration around those locations, as the author suggests. It worked like a charm! The markets gave me an insight into Parisian life and a travel experience that went well beyond the usual touristy spots. Markets of Paris was an invaluable resource. The authors descriptions, advice, maps, and handy tips made it all very do-able and the book's handy size fit easily in my backpack. I didn't have any trouble with the type size, as other reviewers have mentioned. While inParis, I even located a couple of particular vendors they feature in the book who were charming and pleased to be remembered. My son had fun exploring the markets as well and we both found interesting and unusual gifts to bring home to family and friends. I highly recommend it!

This lovely book was our go-to guide on a recent trip to Paris. We rented an apartment for a week and went to different markets on several days to buy yummy things for the several meals we had at home. Looking through the book and choosing the markets to go to and then visiting them was a highlight of the trip for our almost 11year old grandson, second only to the Eiffel Tower as a trip favorite. We found the book to be well-organized and easy to use, and the information up-to-the-minute. That said, this book is also great fun to browse through even if you have no immediate plans to visit Paris. The photos are lovely and the descriptions of all the things available are engaging and tantalizing. I'm buying several copies for gifts.

I agree with each positive review I have read about this guide. But what could have been the best guide to Paris markets and a source of captivating facts suffers from a decision which considerably impairs its usefulness. This weakness has been mentioned in at least one of the negative reviews. The texts are excellent: informative, colorful, and detailed. The photography is stunning. Graphic illustrations are superior. Unfortunately, an apparent attempt to make the size of the volume convenient for travelers has resulted in the use of a spidery lightface font of such small size as to make it extremely difficult if not nearly impossible to consult while walking, riding on a bus or the Metro, in a taxi or just in low light. It's a shame, because the content of this little guide is exceptional and the authors are to be congratulated for their labors. I lived in Paris, have visited many of the markets covered, and co-authored a series of guidebooks to Paris hotels and restaurants so I know how equally important this little guide is to both the traveler and to a resident and how much effort it took to prepare it. Note: I have seen only the second edition and do not know if the first edition may have had a more readable font.

I had the 1st edition which I bought when it first came out (2006) and I loved it (still have it), It was a paperback with an almost cardboard-like cover with very heavy paper and the pictures were sharp and clear. It was a very durable edition. I bought this 2012 edition because it had been updated (granted, it is still a little out of date) and I wanted a new one for my trip this May. It has 46 more pages than the last edition and is thinner so it is great to carry in a purse or even a large pocket. It has a lot more information and is arranged a little differently which is nice. The downside is it has horrible shiny paper that is slippery which makes the pages difficult to turn and it looks like the pages were run off in a duplicating machine (so the pictures are horrible, not nice and bright and clear like the original edition). Yes, the writing is very small which is a little difficult for me to read (since I am getting older) so I need readers. I think for a person with normal eyesigh,t it will be fine. I'm not put off because there is not a map in it. Just get yourself a copy of a Paris street map and you can copy the map and mark the places on it you see in the book that you are interested in. I am anxious to see how accurate this guidebook is since it is 6 years old, but probably for the most part I think it will still be relevant. I just really hate the slippery, shiny, paper big time, turning the pages is not fun after a while. I'm conflicted whether to recommend it or not.

My husband and I just returned from five days in Paris and we were fortunate to have "Markets in Paris" in our backpack. Being relatively new travelers to Paris, not tourists, our goal was to experience Paris as the locals do. We reviewed the markets, selected those which looked most interesting and headed out each morning on the subway to a different part of Paris and to a different market. This book was such a resource for us and got us up and out and about to a unique part of the city each and every morning. The information and resources provided were just what we needed to provide us directions, great places to eat and realistic expectations on what we might find at each market. Thanks for writing such a great "travel partner" for our trip!

I needed the locations, descriptions, and open hours for markets and restaurants near an apartment in Le Marais. This is the perfect guide for anyone who desires to buy their own food, or fresh gift baskets, while in Paris. The bistro and brasserie descriptions are equally helpful for all those times when you are out enjoying the city. The opening chapters a full of guidance for how to operate cordially and effectively in markets. I especially appreciate the organization by arrondissement as well as listing the closest metro stations for each establishment.

This small book is packed with information and photographs, not to mention tips that it would take years to find out for yourself - like the best places to park, how many stalls in a Market at different times of the week or even different times of the year. Really makes you want to book your tickets to Paris.

Love this little book, and combined with Markets of Paris FACEBOOK page...so much info I can't wait to go to Paris on holiday again.

This is a great little book, easy to carry with you in a pocket or bag, offering good recommendations, directions and suggests for eating. Nice to have the arrondissement listed so you can plan a day of things in the same areas so as not to waste time.
