Q: Do the buckles aid in adjusting the fit, or are they merely decorative? I'm trying to lose some weight and my measurements may change a little.

Buckles definitely are there to help you fit in this right! If you never have worn a kilt before, get ready for the most comfortable piece of clothing you will ever wear! You see a kilt does not ride on you hips though a one inch band with a belt around you like a pair of pants! In fact, do NOT use your pant size! Your kilt should be up around your belly button and the buckles help you to adjust the fit from you waist, all the way across you hips and buttocks. You want to adjust your kilt in the shape of a bell to fit you specifically! You can not do this with pants!!! Take a cloth tape, measure around your waist at you belly button. (You can wear you kilt lower, but I bet you will want to wear it where recommended!) Snug it up around your waist and adjust your buckle straps so you kilt feels snug across a 5 to 6 inch range around your body. You do not say how much you want to lose in weight, but if you think you will drop a pant size, you will likely drop a kilt waist size! You want you kilt to feel snug and firm at your waist, but not tight! Hope this helps!

Q: I just measure myself against my waist and i am a 41 what fo you suggest

Both answers so far are right. If you measure a 41, you would want to order a 42. I measure a 37 and wear size 38 and they fit great, with or without a belt. Just double check your measurement and follow BW's answer of not adding any extra to your measurement.
