I bought this book for my 8 year old daughter. We have been looking for more fictional chapter books and not graphic novels. She loved the mystery story and we have since purchased the other two books in the series.

This is the first book in a new crime-fighting mystery series for middle-grade readers. Sophie is staying with her cousin, Jessica, for the summer. The twelve-year-old cousins share an affinity for adventures and mysteries. While walking along a trail, the cousins discover a briefcase filled with feathers. They bring their prize to the local sheriff who immediately decides to assist them in their newest adventure. The plot moves quickly, and the characters remind me of a Nancy Drew book. I believe it has the most appeal for readers in fifth or sixth grade. The characters are interesting and plot details sustain the mystery.

Enjoyed it

This is a good read for a late 5th grader or 6th grader. It is fast paced and full of action. The girls show a sophisticated look at a small town. Enjoy a whirlwind of ideas.

Got this as a gift and my daughter loves it. I will be looking for the next book in the series for her January birthday!

Set in a small town, The Feather Chase is the story of two much different twelve-year-old cousins spending the summer together who involve themselves in a mystery. Sophie is a small-town girl, prefering the outdoors and solving mysteries. Jessica, a big city girl, is more concerned about choosing clothes, applying makeup, and flirting with boys. Despite their differences, the girls work on a mystery together after they find a suitcase in the forest. One of the best messages that author Shannon L. Brown demonstrates is that people of different backgrounds and interests can get along and find common ground. I've read comments from others who compare this book to Nancy Drew or The Hardy Boys, but I favor those series over this one. The plot was a bit slow for my tastes, but maybe younger children (4th grade?) might be okay with it. The parts I found most implausible had to do with how two twelve year olds seemed to be more astute than FBI agents and the local sheriff.

My 12 yr old is a reluctant reader. So it takes us a long time to find the right book. The book took two weeks to arrive! Thankfully, she has engaged with it. I have given a 3 star rating because the book is way more expensive than other childrens books. This has prompted me to seek out more affordable book clubs that sell series of books for reasonable prices.
