This thing is awesome !
Actually I use it as a backup and also when I'm on a boat with lesser experience than myself captain. These hand-helds are very accurate, a unit you can rely on.

Slides all over the place
Previous to owning this unit I had used the Garmin model 78 for many years, owning several of that model and liked it very much. The 79 series functions fine. The problem I have is with the housing design. The back of the unit is shaped like the hull of a boat! Its convex. Quite a silly design given that it’s meant to be used on boats and it is a handheld unit. When you put it down on its back it rocks and slides all over the place because of the shape! The only way to put it down to stop from running away is to place it screen down. This is not good as it puts the screen at risk of being damaged and it also sometimes activates the soft touch buttons which is extremely annoying! The senior engineers at Garmin must have been napping on this design. I would have thought that a company like Garmin would field test new designs before putting to market.

Mine isn’t touch screen. Bad battery life.
It’s an accurate gps as far as I can tell. It provided good information. User interface is clunky and hard to get used to. The menu system is very old school. Honestly, the whole unit is old school. It is a good size if you can be still while looking at it. If you’re in motion, it’s too small to see well. My main complaint is battery life. I had no choice but to use Duracell batteries. Not sure if the usb supplies power. Each set of new batteries lasted about 3.5 hours before I was well into a single bar on battery life and needed to change. My micro usb tray was faulty out of the box. If you need a GPS with specific features like a compass or dropping pins accurately and you don’t have high expectations, this unit seems ok.

Device is good. But it lacks maps of India. Garmin does not provide any maps of India. You can buy maps of Europe, USA and Canada from Garmin website separately. It does not come preloaded with maps. Moreover, a 32 gb micro sd card is required to download maps. It is not recommended to load maps on the device itself. It does not support micro sd cards above 32 gb. Also panasonic rechargeable batteries AA size (two are required) are recommended for this device. Do not use Lithium ion batteries as sometimes Lithium ion batteries have more voltage than written and that can damage the device. Not useful within India, unless Garmin provides a detailed map of India. Can be used if you are travelling abroad. Third party maps of India are available but they are less detailed and less accurate than Google maps.

Like the design, smooth and good hand size. Dislike the rubberise body as it will go sticky after couple of years just like my really old 76cx. Good that I can use my old Bluechart G1 chart from the 76cx on the new 79s. Had to buy a new Marine Mount for the 79s as the old one won't fit.
