IMPORTANT NOTE: There is now a NEW and UPDATED 6th Edition of this best selling GIS Fundamentals textbook by Paul Bolstad, in stock and available for purchase on desertcart! Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are computer-based tools for the entry, maintenance, and analysis of spatial data. GIS are critical for effective resource management, and have been applied across a wide range of science, business, and government endeavours. This book provides an introduction to the theory and application of GIS. It is written for use in an introductory GIS class and as a reference for the GIS practitioner. This fifth edition balances theoretical and applied material, so that students may apply knowledge of GIS in the solution of real-world problems. Improvements over the previous editions are included in each chapter. Topics treated include an introduction to GIS, spatial data models, map projections, data entry, image data, GPS, digital data, database systems in GIS, general spatial analysis, raster analysis, terrain modeling, metadate, standards, and accuracy assessments. Review: Excellent resource about the subject of GIS - I got this book to help study for the GISP. It is an excellent resource for all things GIS and takes you through pretty much everything related to the subject. Lots of great examples and illustrations. I keep it at work now as a reference. Review: The GIS Introduction Book - Using this textbook for my Masters program. Explanations on difficult content are clear and the overall style of writing keeps you engaged but not too flashy or dramatic. Covers a lot of information regarding maps in general and GIS.

Beginner GIS book
I've only read the first chapter but this book was a lot more informative than the book I read and used in my beginner GIS class in college. I hope to get more opportunities to read it this summer so that I'm properly prepared for my next GIS class.

it was a little too advanced for a beginner like me so I ended up returning it
Book is very thorough. However, it was a little too advanced for a beginner like me so I ended up returning it. It reads more like a college textbook.

High Quality Information
I lived that this helped my friend Jean exactly what they needed to to access their class. This book was bound nicely. There weren't any grammatical it spelling errors found. The price was good as well. This is a great text book.

But it's a great companion to the course
I bought this for the first class of a graduate program I am taking. It's very much a textbook, which means it very thorough. But it's a great companion to the course.

Big Book
A lot of great material, but feels a little outdated. Got it for an intro GIS class and never opened it and still did well.

Despite being a previous edition - worth looking at
This book comprehensively covers all aspects of G.I.S. And despite being a previous edition is very much current with regards to it's contents.
