Buy Algebra (Graduate Texts in Mathematics, 73) on desertcart.com ✓ FREE SHIPPING on qualified orders Review: Perfect! - One of the most comprehensive coverage of all basic and also some advanced topics that should be covered in a graduate level algebra course. On a different note, though I bought this book in used condition from desertcart Warehouse Deals, it was in almost new condition and was an awesome bargain at the price. Completely satisfied. Review: Perfect mid-level algebra text - More concise than Dummit /Foote, but less so than Lang; less pedantic than Dummit/Foote, but more so than Lang. Hungerford covers less material than either, but as far as the irreducible 'common core' of material goes, Hungerford is a great compromise between the other two. It's an excellent text to use for self-studying/reviewing.

decent
My thoughts are ambivalent on this one: the text is quite concise, yet it manages to be pedantically precise to the point of making it sometimes difficult to read. Hungerford takes the convention of rings without unity (which is similar to other books as well), but unlike most books, the theory of rings is developed in this full generality, and thus he ends up considering objects such as left/right modules over rings which are non-unital and non-commutative. The chapters on field theory (V and VI) are nigh-unreadable that our algebra course switched texts midway through. Despite this, the text manages to keep everything at a reasonable length; the group theory and commutative algebra sections are really nice as well, and it is categorical (meaning it is actually relevant to how algebraists today think). Works decently as a reference and has good exercises (though they can sometimes sparsely populate the book) --- but also very fast-paced (if you're into that).

Perfect Intro For a Grad Student
It presents everything in the context of category theory. I find this makes a LOT of computations easier. In particular, I've found it's point of view very useful in functional analytic work that relies heavily on algebra.

Great for Studying
Very detailed with many examples; a sensible organization for a first graduate course in Abstract Algebra!

Impressive, if not so easy to read
As a reference, this is simply an amazing book; tons of information are crammed into this book. The flip side is that if you are seeing this information for the first time, the presentation can be a little daunting. I started using this book in a class last year and hated it at first, because the presentation of material here is very densely packed together and not written for maximum clarity. For example, the chapter on category theory was the first time I'd seen the subject, and I found it frustrating, unlike the presentation given by, say, Rotman in his Algebraic Topology text. All of that said, though, I appreciate the book more now looking back on the material. Overall, if you haven't seen the material before, this is a fine book as long as you've got someone to help you through the rough spots. As a reference, though, this book is extraordinary.

This book is very basic and will accompany me for 4 years of study in the field of abstract algebra. It is very easy to read, therefore best for self-study. The book comes in amazing condition, just like new.

This is a very well written textbook on abstract algebra. Has a lot of information and it is very good also as a reference.
