It would be useful to know the procedure in the product description.** A: Hello, A few drops of the solutions are simply added to the small testing "dish". The alligator clip is then attached to the piece of jewelry that is being tested and the piece is dipped in to the solution. The unit will then light up and indicate the karat value. The unit does come with an operation manual which explains this process in more detail. Thank you! **Q: Will this device test rose gold and white gold?** A: I find that the test for rose gold damages most items but checking white gold works fine - leaves a burnt spot. Most irritating is that the well is too small and makes for awkward testing of many larger items. **Q: Does the solution have to be changed for each piece being tested, or can I put the few drops of solution and test a few pieces one after the other?** A: The solution is good for multiple pieces, maybe a dozen. However, the solution is only good for 10-15 minutes. Then the unit has to be cleaned out and new solution used. **Q: Can this test silver?** A: Not with that one , You need a JPS silver testing acid and a test stone .
