Would this work for a paralyzed patient? I am currently lifting her from the wheelchair to the toilet but it is really straining my back.

No. You should use a Hoyer-Lift with someone who is paralyzed, for your safety and theirs. I would never use a gait belt for this use unless you’re extremely strong and can get behind the person for lifting. This isn’t easy when getting the person out of a chair or off of the toilet, you have to stand on the side and can only use one hand for lifting in these instances. There may be other methods that I’m not familiar with. Worth looking into or asking the patients physician.

How many inches extra should the belt be in addition to waist size?

It’s really a matter of taste since the belt has a device that bites into the material. Once you fasten it, it’s not coming loose until you want it to. But as a general guide line, I would suggest three inches past the connection point.

Does this belt have the metal teeth?

Yes, it has metal teeth. It is a nice heavy belt but the buckle is almost too narrow for the strap and must be worked in.

Great for preventing falls and helping up after a fall

Very nice belt for helping my husband to get up if he falls and keeping him steady when walking is difficult. Wide belt does not cut into skin and the buckle keeps the belt tight to give me something to hold onto while helping him.
