Between the Gates: Lucid Dreaming, Astral Projection, and the Body of Light in Western Esotericism

I have two decades of occult practice under my belt, and no book has done more to directly strengthen my psychic faculties and relieve my fear of death than this one. Moreover, my ability to consciously astral project has come to an all time high after practicing just half of what it teaches. I will update this review once I have completed all the exercises in the allotted time period. I wish that all Freemasons were like this author. Utterly sublime.

The best thing about the works of Mark Stavish is that they don't labor under the false idea that psychic and spiritual development is capped by the natural affinity a student shows early on. Unlike many works I've read and occultists I've known personally who said that one either could or could not do these things based on some obscure, incredibly vague component in their being, this book guides the serious-minded and dedicated student through the steps to grow in the practices of lucid dreaming, astral projection and the development of the Body of Light. Each of these skills, alone, is worth a lifetime of dedication and work and this author is unique in the approach he takes in instruction. Even the mastery of lucid dreaming can change the life of anyone who does it for the better. Entire worlds of wonder are open to the student who achieves even that, a fraction of this book's information, let alone the rest of it. He tells the truth when he says that persistence and dedication are the primary factors in personal development here. If one practices the methods detailed herein, every day, they are assured success in time. The methods work and are not very difficult. The key, said at the risk of sounding repetitious, is regular, daily practice. Mark Stavish is a treasure-house of occult truths that, should one put one's nose to the grindstone, can transform one's occult practice into something even greater. I imagine anyone who gave this book a low rating did not do the exercises within or, if they did, did not do them regularly or for very long.

This book does a great job at breaking down difficult esoteric concepts and ideas into plain modern English. It’s extremely undervalued if you ask me, because what is inside, you only have to study and see for yourself, that is if you are sincere. This book will bring about the greatest level of compassion because it really brings and understanding to this life between birth and death and after death and a greater appreciation for the time we have on this earth. The exercises are gems and anyone can fit time to do them, as long as they remain persistent. This is also a book that should read and studied multiple times over years of inner work. It will truly bring about transformation.

Good book, complete guide to astral travel. I have not finished the book yet, but it was recommended by a friend who had great success with it's techniques.

Perhaps not the “last word” on the subject of death (there seems to be many layers and still hidden knowledge in this complex field of the existence)… but nevertheless a very good written material and data that could help the seekers out there to evaluate and compare this information in the light of other present and past written and oral traditions, myths and ‘mapping’ of those lands that appear to exist beyond our physical realm.

On an initial read-through, I found this book fascinating. I am not that familiar with the Hermetic literature, but I have not seen anything quite like Stavish's approach to it anywhere else. He links astral travel, lucid dreaming, and other psychic phenomena to the Qabala and path working in a unique way. The exercises are not onerous, all the early exercises and many of the advanced are not time consuming, needing only 10-15 minutes a day. Like any other system, they require consistency and perseverance but do have the promise of yielding positive feedback fairly soon instead of years from now. Also Stavish puts his system in a context of other spiritual disciplines so the work he describes can me melded with many different paths. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in lucid dreaming or astral travel no matter what their spiritual path.

This is a complete course on Hermetic mind/spirit practice. Not a light read. Well worth it if you want to put the time and effort into learning and practicing a Hermetic way of both going in and out.

I purchased this book with high hopes considering the good reviews given here and I was greatly disappointed. This book is filled with nonsensical gibberish, at least to someone who is not an expert on "Hermiticism" or "Esotericism" (neither of which I had ever heard of before). The author speaks with a tone of authority about a never ending stream of concepts about the nature of the universe without giving a hint of how he arrives at these conclusions. I admittedly only read about the first third of the book before I decided it was complete nonsense and skimmed over the rest. As for lucid dreaming and astral projection, the book does provide some basics but there are much better texts out there, I recommend the works by Stephen LaBerge or Robert Bruce, particularly "Astral Dynamics"

Don't be fooled by the size and appearance of this book. This is GOLD. The author has an amazing capacity to synthesize very complex and profound subjects, like the Qabbalah, the tree of life, transmutation, alchemical procedure, etc... He does it in such a way that you can understand in depth in just a few pages. And besides that he gives you a full system for you to find the path to truth, without complex rituals and systems. You can just get right into the work and practice.

einerseits scheint der author über fundierte kenntnisse verschiedener systeme zu verfügen, für einen totalen anfänger mag das buch einiges an information beinhalten, allerdings bezweifle ich dass jemand mit diesen unsystematischen methoden - ohne genauestens ein inneres gefühl - sich halbwegs mit kabbalah auszukennen - zu einem OBE kommen wird; wer sich nicht 15 jahre lang durch die systematische schulung eines amorc, bota, golden dawn, sol etc. quälen mag wird mit einigen unsystematischen übungen wie - den hebräischen buchstaben shin über dem kopf visualisieren - nichts anfangen können und definitiv NICHT zu einem OBE Erlebniss kommen; wer nach langem mühsamen training endlich auf täglicher basis astralreisen induzieren kann kennt die schwierigkeiten und es ist eine tatsache dass manche menschen auf grund von unbewussten ängsten oder mangels der zeit, 20 jahre lang immer wieder zu üben, zu lesen und sich weiterzuentwickeln - niemals OBEs haben werden bzw. diese nicht bewusst hervorrufen können; hier möchte ich auf buhlmann oder monroe verweisen, für jene menschne sind diese bücher wesentlich geeigneter weil die übungen nachvollziehbar, einfach und ohne qabbalistischem schnick schnack sind; wer einen luziden traum haben möchte muss einfach nur ein traumtagebuch führen und zunächst mal üben sich jede nacht an einen oder mehrere träume zu erinnern, dann wenn dies gelungen ist - täglich mehrmals sich fragen und überprüfen ob er / sie träumt oder nicht - was irgendwann dazu führt dass man gewohnheitsmässig im traum dies ebenfalls tut und dann erkennt dass man träumt ....mit qabbalistischen methoden luzide träumen ist ziemlich umständlich; auch was die lichtkörpermethode betrifft - ist diese in w e buttlers büchern vollständig angegeben und man benötigt sicherlich nicht noch ein buch in dem zum 500000 male die übung der mittleren säule und das kleine bannritual abgelichtet ist! auch ist diese übung sehr fortgeschritten und die meisten leser werden kaum jemans damit erfolg haben wenn sie nicht bardon seit jahren üben, mitglied bei sol oder amorc sind und ihre vorstellungskraft seit jahrzehnten schulen; hingegen mit buhlmanns methoden, mit den gateway CDs vom monroe institut, mit den büchern von robert bruce kann man ohne mysterienschulen - wissen zumindest einige erlebnisse haben, ich persönlich würde empfehlen: ---- alle 3 bücher von robert monroe seine CDs - Gateway 1- 6 ausserkörperliche erfahrungen (die 4 CDs mit den Hemi Sync signalen ohne sprache) buhlmann - ich glaube es heisst astralreisen, das letzte abenteuer der menschheit ... ---- zweifelsohne ist es leider so dass für eine vielzahl von menschen astralreisen die man jederzeit hervorrufen kann - eine wunschvorstellung bleiben wird, und man ein halbes leben der übung widmen muss bis man ergebnisse erzielt; ich selbst hatte schon als kind regelmässig spontane OBEs, musste mir aber während der letzten 20 jahre mühsam die fähigkeit aneignen, zumindest halbwegs bewusst den körper verlassen zu können; selbst luzides träumen, welches ich jede woche habe - kann ich nicht immer gezielt auslösen; ich kenne niemand der ausgerechnet mit kabbalah sehr erfolgreich ist, die meisten leute bleiben in diversen logen hängen und feiern 40 jahre lang bei cafee und kuchen immer dieselben langweiligen rituale und betreiben symbolstudium ohne jemals wirklich mit den hebräischen buchstaben, den planeten und 4 elementen praktisch arbeiten zu können; jederzeit willkürlich den körper verlassen zu können erreicht man im übrigen auch relativ leicht wenn man täglich yoga übt, raja yoga betreibt und ein intensives sadhana (spirituelle praxis) betreibt, ich selbst bin yoga lehrer und yoga acharya und nach einer matra einweihung in indien - nachdem ich mehrmals monatelang in ashrams verbracht hatte - ging es plötzlich; natürlich ist es bei mir berufsbedingt möglich, ganze jahre in indien zu verbringen .... es bleibt dem leser überlassen ob er wirklich sein gesamtes leben dieser sache widmen will - OBEs sind letztlich nur eine vorstufe zu wesentlich wichtigeren bewusstseinszuständen welche über systematische spirituelle schulung erreicht werden; (kriya yoga, kundalini yoga, raja yoga oder einer systematischens chulung über sol, amorc etc ...) This is one of the most complete and helpful books I've read on the subject of meditation and spiritual development from a hermetic perspective. I highly recommend it.
