"IT'S DARK, IT'S RAINING, THERE'S BAD STUFF GOING ON."

*by S***N on Reviewed in the United States on January 31, 2014*

Jazz fans listen up please. Even if you're not a "soundtrack person" (I'm not either) you really should check this collection out. Don't be fooled by a couple of the movie titles--thinking they're "not jazz". The truth is every soundtrack (ST) collected here ("Private Hell 36" is a personal favorite) is brimming with good/great jazz. The remastered sound is excellent--especially from movies from (now) so long ago. The 50 page booklet is an example of what a booklet should be--informative, intelligent, and interesting. Not only is there a synopsis of each ST, but there's also a synopsis of each movie, plus photos dealing with each movie, and reproductions of movie lobby cards. Also here is ST information on the recordings, plus personnel, date, place, etc. And everything fits inside a thick lidded cardboard box--which is cool looking all by itself. Some of these movies are well known--"A Streetcar Named Desire", "The Man With The Golden Arm", and "Anatomy Of A Murder"-- especially. But the other four flicks (we used to spell it the "hip" way--flics), while lesser known, are full of good 1950's era jazz. Musicians, composers, and arrangers include Ray Heindorf, Henry Mancini Shorty Rogers, Pete Candoli, Jimmy Guiffre, Bud Shank, Shelly Manne, The Chico Hamilton Quartet (1957), Milt Holland, Plas Johnson, Barney Kessel, Duke Ellington and his Orchestra (1959), Gerald Wilson, the Modern Jazz Quartet (1959), Bill Evans, Jim Hall, Gunther Schuller, and many others. While a few of these STs have been released individually, having all of them plus several others, all in one nice, neat, well done box set is pretty much a no-brainer. And so is purchasing this set sooner rather than later. Some STs delve deeper into that "film noir sound" than others, but even the lighter moments throughout these STs are full of feeling and impressionism. And another benefit is the more you listen to these scores the more you take away from the music each time. Fans of 1950's era straight ahead, impressionistic jazz are missing out if they don't grab this collection. Sometimes combining orchestrations, be-bop, and that "cool, hip" 1950's feeling is what this collection is all about. Sometimes it's straight be-bop alone, other times it's the fuller sound of an orchestra. But no matter--the arrangements give this music it's shadowy life and vibrancy. Even the more middle of the road sounding tunes that help weave together each of these STs, are a good balance for the darker, more dangerous and mysterious tracks that are full of a subtle menace and intrigue. This is the first in an on-going series of ST collections from the Moochin' About label. The second 5 CD set, "Beat, Square & Cool", may be even better than this first collection. The third in the series, "The New Wave" (not generally released as I write this), continues with 6 CDs of hip film scores. The 72 (!) page booklet is equal to the other series booklets, plus included are b&w stills from each movie and the movie lobby cards for each flick. But beware--Amazon U.K. is also selling a 5 CD, 60 page booklet set under the same (more or less) title. Hopefully the disagreements between the various record label parties will get things straightened out in the near future. Taken together, this is the best on-going series of film noir STs that's ever been released. While this series is widely regarded in Europe, jazz fans here in the U.S. need to know about this fine series of movie jazz scores.

    Great Jazz Noir Collection

*by J***N on Reviewed in the United States on November 13, 2017*

If you like the sultry jazz of the Noir movies then you should get this collection. I am not familiar with the Moochin About label but they did a greatjob on this one. The selections are outstanding and the audio quality is top-notch. Some collections in this genre are just thrown together. Here there was some thought put into song selection and annotation in the booklet that gives excellent information on the scores. Often soundtrack scores don't hold together as an extended listen. This collection avoids that with excellent pacing. Buy it. You won't be disappointed.

Snarliing post-big-band now forever tied to suspense movies

*by R***I on Reviewed in the United States on January 7, 2015*

Fantastic blaring post big-band jazz now enshrined as suspense movie theme music of the fifties. If you like this kind of stuff, this set is for you. Music works well divorced from the actual movies. Only issue is the designation "noir", always a bit vague in whatever context; don't worry about it, though. Just get this set.
