none of the magnets connect with each other, they only repel. Was it supposed to be like this?

Place the front of the earring on the front of the earlobe. Making sure the magnet on the earring back is aligned with the front.

How strong are the magnets?

They were not strong enough to attach the earring to my daughter’s earlobe. Lost one just trying to fit an earring onto her ear. They are tiny. My daughter does have thicker lobes but the magnet didn’t even perform its fundamental job. We got the 6 mm. Perhaps those were just too heavy.
