has anyone compared accuracy to digial thermometers? I get a higher temp on vicks digial

In searching the medical literature, it appears as if this type of thermometer (i.e. a "galinstan thermometer" or GT ) is the most accurate. The tradeoff is speed. Digital thermometers (DT) are much faster, and still reasonably accurate whereas the GT takes longer to get a measurement but is considered the most accurate of the alternatives.

Is there a trick to shaking it down? Lots of people say they can’t do it and I’m having the same problem.

There is a flipper to shake it down in the package. If you use it, you can.

Can the Thermometer be used recctally as well?

I don't think so the head is small unlike a rectal thermometer that has a large head
