Good for a book that looks like it's made from interviews and press articles
I think this book does deserve a top ranking because it does give us good insight to Pre's life and is inspiring though still a basic overview. With that said, it does seem largely to be based on newspaper and magazine articles and interviews and as someone said, seems to scratch the surface about Prefontaine. However, in doing that, we still get the basic facts of his life, hometown, achievements, a bit on his training habits and his personality. Perhaps there is the need for a more grand examination of this runner but living tragically a short life, this is still a fair summary. Perhaps more about his trip to the Olympics and disagreements with the AAU could have been written about but I'm sure, there was a lot more to come from him. Eventually, I've got to see the movies.

What an inspiration!
A great read, especially for runners. Pre was quite the competitor and driven to succeed. He didn't have very many close friends because no one could keep up with him!

Good Overview of Pre's Time
Enjoyed this book about Pre. I didn't know a lot about him, but being a runner, I was very interested. It was a great story about Pre. Lots of little anecdotes and quotes from people who knew him/spent time around him. Author did a good job of bringing out the essence of Pre's impact which was significant given the short time he was with us.

Spectacular book. I have been vaguely aware of the Pre legacy for a number of years but being from a different era it was great to see how he captivated the sport in such a short period of time. Very, very good read for anyone unfamiliar with this great athlete.

This is an a easy read. I finished it in about half of ...
I had heard of Steve Prefontaine but do not really remember him. He will Frank Shorter helped to fuel the running boom. Pre was an intense competitor that drew huge crowds. This book tells the story of his races and of the work many did not know that he did with kids and in prisons. This is an a easy read. I finished it in about half of day of airplane travel. Pre was awesome
Liked the book didn't overly worship or eulogise him. Plain reporting of an extraordinary person and runner. Runners will dig it as should anyone whom longs for an honest hero.

Very little learned about Prefontaine's personality or his training
The books was okay, but you learned little about PRE except that he had a big personality, hated to lose, trained hard (or so it is implied) and that he often made excuses on the rare occasion that he did lose.

Pre book review
Interesting incites on races less popular in Steve's career. Really shows human side of a running legend. Great read for anyone who enjoys running and inspiration.

Pre!
A running legend, and an athlete whose heights we will never know. Being a runner myself, I knew of his legend, and have even seen one of the films about his life. The book covers the essentials of who Steve Prefontaine was, using interviews of people who knew him and tracing his running life to its tragic end. 4 stars because I feel that the writing could have been better. The story of Steve Prefontaine deserved a better prose style. But that is a minor point. If you love distance running, read the book. The sadness of an overturned sports car crushing the life out of such potential will move you to tears. It did me.

Love it!

The content might be great but the quality of the book?
Really poor quality print. If I had ever seen this in a bookstore there is no chance I would have bought this. Shoddy print and paper. Really low quality for a book almost $18. What is the publisher even thinking? Why is it that books on Track are such shoddy productions? Not the first from Amazon.
