I haven't tested it but I would say rain proof but not fully water proof.

I am wondering if it will fit in Rayner's 40 25 20 boxes? Is the smallest one out of all the airlines. I just can't find luggage like that.

how many compartments

Apart from the main compartment ,there is only one small zipped pocket on the front,at the top. There is a small net half pocket on front,not closeable ,which would probably only hold a boarding pass! There is a very small attached zipped purse on front ,and I mean small. You could get maybe a couple of credit cards in it. But I bought it because it's the exact size for Easyjets new hand luggage allowances.
