How many items will this hold? Can you hang a wet heavy blanket on it?

The max load capacity of this rack is 400lbs. 200lbs on each rail. It can hold tons of heavy winter coat. And certainly is can hold a wet heavy blanket.

Are the rails far enough apart to hold clothes on either side?

Yes, the rails is 22in far apart. Clothes would not touch each other when hanging side by side.

Can I take the wheels off?

Wheels are removalble and lockable. You can choose to either use them or not.
