Question 1

Can Chimfex be stored indefinitely?  Does it have an expiration date?

Mine states "best used within 60 months of Manufacture Date" (so 5 yrs).  Both of mine came with Man. Date of 6/2016...... so I'm good until AT LEAST 6/2022!!!   Nice!

Question 2

Do you put it directly in the fire?  With it still in the box?  I'm trying to picture how the suppressant is activated.

No. You pull the stick out and its like a large match sort of. Remove the cap which has the strike surface on it. You light it up by striking the cap against the tip of the stick and it lights up like a large sparkler. Then put it inside the fire place or wood stove next to the fire. It suffocates the fire by depleting it of oxygen and cools the flue. They have some great short videos on YouTube that will be helpful too. We had to use one of these suppressants this past winter and I am VERY GRATEFUL this product is available!

Question 3

Is this product specifically used only on chimneys?  Can it be used for automotive engine bay fires?

Question 4

Are these Rutland and if so what is the expiration date?

There's no expiration date anywhere on the box, but on the suppression flare itself, mine says best if used by July 2015.  I purchased mine about year or so ago so maybe this best used by date is about 2 years after manufactured date. Personally however, I can't believe it wouldn't work for many years after the best used by date. I don't plan to burn mine up next year, maybe 3 or 4 years later I might. Frankly I'm hoping I never have a chimney fire or have a need to use it. Merry Christmas, hope this helped.
