Hard wood and makes a very nice pen.

Spectacular grain and beautiful colors. A few pieces had big, unrepairable cracks or quite a bit of sap wood. Would buy again understanding that there will be some wastage.

First of all, I noticed some reviews mention that the woods aren’t as grainy or have slightly different colors than the pictures, so I wanted to address that. This is wood. Every piece is unique, so don’t expect everything to look exactly like the pictures. The wood I got had a burled piece, two with a lot of wood grain, some with minor grain and a couple that were plain. That’s fine with me. In fact, I like that each wood blank has its own characteristics. Drilling the blank requires some patience. You can’t just rip through it. The sawdust tends to bunch up on the bit, so you’ll want to be sure to back out periodically. When it comes to the lathe work, it is awesome to work with. When I was done shaping the blanks, they were incredibly smooth. This made finishing much easier. Be sure to check your blanks over before you use them. One had a hairline crack down the length of it so I had to stabilize it first. Overall, this is a great wood to use. Once finished, it rich dark-brown colors and the grains really stand out. The pictures truly don’t do it justice.

I was very pleased with the blanks I received. All 10 were nice and usable. The color and grain vary greatly. That is a real plus to me. Could be an issue if you are trying to make matching sets of items. I will order more from this seller. They are expensive, but buying pre cut pen blanks is always the least cost effective way to buy wood stock.
