Review: Still great phone for a very reasonable price - This phone still holds good, even though there's Xperia V generation available now. I like it being compact and easy to operate one hand, lightweight so you don't feel it in your jeans pocket, and offering decent performance, good camera (good for a phone), side mounted fingerprint reader (they usually work better than the ones inside the screen) and other features like stereo speakers, 3.5 headphone jack, video output (yes - you can connect external display/projector to it and watch videos/movies on big screen). What I didn't like (and these are just minor annoying things): - you cannot reassign Voice Assistant button to another function - it's hard to take screenshots because the combination of buttons to take screenshot shows you the menu window, which then appears on the screenshot you took - many features in the picture editing software are not available without paid subscription - you can't quickly adjust display brighness - whatever you do, you can't get brighness menu accessible with 1 swipe, you need to swipe twice to see this setting. Also, because Sony Xperias aren't very popular, there is very limited selection of cases/bumpers for this model.
Review: Fast, compact, stylish - Purchased to replace an ageing Xperia L1 that was getting quite bogged down. The first thing I want to say is the colour of the green version I ordered is nothing like the product photos. Of course, we should all be aware that all product photos, at least those from companies with big budgets, are all digitally enhanced to give them a consistent visual quality. More often than not, this means bolder looking colours than you would see in real life. How big a difference will also depend on the zealousness of retouching, as well as the actual materials and finishes used in the physical product. In the case of the Xperia 5 III, the coloured mirror glass rear panel and colour treatment of the metal frame are almost impossible to see with anything like the lustrous, opulent green in the marketing images (other than those that are photographs of the product with people and other real world objects/scenes together). It looks vaguely green under only very optimal conditions, preferably natural light. I chose a high quality Spigen TPU clear case, which actually has a blue tint, much like glass typically has a green tint. Add that to the challenging green of the Xperia 5 III and you end up with something bordering on night blue, but only from certain angles. 8 GB system RAM and 128 GB storage seems a little stingy, you have to go to the Xperia 1 III to get 256 GB storage. There is SD storage support, which cannot be said of some other flagship level devices, but Sony continues to use this silly hybrid dual SIM tray. So you can have two SIMs, or one SIM and one SD card. This is an extremely disappointing and avoidable limitation - dual SIM Xperias of the past (still have a Z3 Dual here) that could support dual SIM plus SD card. Don't even try the hack shown on countless YouTube videos of skimming a SD card and gluing a peeled-off SIM to the back, unless you want to risk damaging the snug SIM slot of your new Xperia (who knows what phones these guys are foisting such barbaric solutions upon). I can't speak for the Cinema Pro app, other than that it looks to have many of the features and terminology I know of from professional cinema cameras. Photo Pro is very good, as an Alpha camera user myself, and in some respects it even beats the real Alpha cameras. Screen size for one, it's amazing to have the live monitor feed and some settings displayed together. In candid portrait photography it seems to automatically lock onto subjects very reliably, in a way that makes shooting fun. 5G support is improved from the 865-based Xperia 5 II and 1 II in a very practical way. No longer does the secondary SIM need to be deactivated(!) to use 5G, now both SIMs can remain active and the active data SIM will get 5G. Screen quality is as good as more technical reviews say. As for whether 4K is really justifiable on the 0.4" larger Xperia 1 series, I can say that the lower resolution on the 5 sometimes manifests with what looks like PenTile matrix subpixel layout (as opposed to RGB stripe) edge artefacts when viewed from close distance, on certain graphical elements and colour combinations. It's absolutely minimal though. 3.5mm headphone jack is very welcome and produces excellent audio quality and is up to driving even some quite fancy wired headphones, such as Sony's own MDR-Z7M2 shown in the marketing of Xperia 5 and 1 II and III. My score is based on the price I paid, £686 handset only. I wouldn't pay full MSRP unless with a wireless headphone bundle, as I did when the Xperia 1 III first came out.
