When we busted this thing out of the box it was all I could do to stay up on it for 3 seconds. Now that we've had it for a week I'm finding myself able to stay up for 30-60 seconds. It is definitely a work out for muscles that are seldom used in everyday life. As far as construction goes the board is high quality. We got the corkboard topped material and we quite like it. I do wish however it was even a little softer. Using the material that is put on the top of wake surfboards might be a good option down the road as that material seems to be soft and sturdy. I wear a size 11 shoe and find that if I am not wearing shoes it is uncomfortable to be on the board. Wearing socks is not ideal as it causes your balancing movements to slip inside your sock which has turned into overcompensating movements in my experience. My board came with a handwritten note from the creator and inventor Eric Olsen. The construction is really top quality, made in America by a small company. The kind of quality one would find with a good skateboard. The size of the deck allows you to position your stance in a number of ways. The rounded fulcrum and end pivots are of a good quality plastic and makes your balance workout pleasant. I have not gotten to the point of doing full spins yet. It is a very handsome accessory to my office. Please note you should not use this on hard wood floors or smooth concrete. Use it safely. It takes some practice to get used to it, but you will notice progression in your abilities if you put your time in! Can you do tricks on it?** A: It's definitely a different feel than a roller board. The 3-dimensional motion makes it more challenging to maintain your balance and is more similar to real-life board sports. It is also safer being low to the ground and one solid piece. (it won't go shooting out from underneath you if you are not paying attention.) It will improve the subtle board controls in your feet that will make you a better rider on all other boards. Rollers are only 2 dimensional rolling back and forth. I created this board because I got bored with my roller board and wanted something better. I designed the WB to be more fun, with more options, and more effective! Practicing spinning is a major difference in particular, but you can do lots of tricks on a Whirly Board. You can spin independantly on all three balance points and transfer from one to the other adding in your own style, you can walk it around the room or spin your way around, you can also do skate style tricks like shuv-its, manuals, or even kick flips. It will make you quick and light on your feet by improving your balance, agility, and ability to maintain your center of balance and spatial awareness. However, get the wide version if you are going to use it with a standing desk. The skinny version has a lot of concave and it will hurt your feet if you stand barefoot. I believe the skinny version is built more for skateboarders who are honing their skills.
