The Complete Surprise: Knitting Elizabeth Zimmermann's Surprise Jacket

I love anything and everything EZ. This book is a welcome and useful addition to my collection. It is packed full of helpful information and tips. A fascinating read for any knitter and a real treat for EZ fans. SHP has also published a Surprise Jacket Calculator, available to download from their website, that complements the information in this book. I haven't bought it yet, but I certainly intend to do so soon.

After having made about a gazillion Baby Surprise Jackets, it's great to be able to translate to an adult sweater. Easy to follow instructions, extremely detailed explanation of how it works, and why it works. Makes it endlessly customizable!

I ordered and paid for one copy, but 4 copies were delivered. I contacted Amazon Customer Service and they told me to keep the 3 extra copies. That's not right (or at least not ethical) because these books aren't inexpensive. If the merchant reads these reviews, please reply to this review with instructions on how I can return them to you. Like Elizabeth Zimmerman books, this is wordy and heavy on theory. It is helpful however if you have the other EZ books to help you with variations to the surprise jacket. It gives you the formula—you need to do the measurements and math. Although it touts itself as being for beginners, I think all but experienced knitters would be frustrated. That said, if you are a fan of EZ, and a confident knitter who is comfortable with their ability to create EZ items, it is a great reference and adjunct to the other EZ books!

I've knit the BSJ at least 4 times previously and I've got notes that remind me if how to avoid some pitfalls. The second one went more easily than the first because I knit it right after the first, just in a bigger size. With 3 and 4 I was back to struggling again. Cully's book has already been helpful for #5 currently on the needles. I love the look of his lifted increase. His additional notes improve on Elizabeth's sometimes sparse directions and the pictures are really helpful. Elizabeth was the one to make me the "boss of my own knitting". Cully continues that encouragement. Kudos to him and Schoolhouse Press. Once I get a couple sweater's finished for the upcoming great-niece, I may finally have the courage to tackle the Adult Surprise.

I love Elizabeth Zimmerman, but if you are a newbie knitter or like more explanation this is the book. In depth, row by row introduction to the Surprise Baby Sweater and its many adaptations.

I loved the book. I enjoy a hard copy craft book for reviewing and studying the pattern. I am looking forward to working on the patterns out of the book.

I had only heard about this until I found this book. I read some and proceeded to make the baby sweater....kinda blind. It came out great!! Now I want to make my 2 10 yr-old granddaughters sweaters. It is a fascinating technique!! It is not for a new beginner but not hard either if you just follow the directions.

Quite tricky to get my head around this book - made one jacket according to the only set of line-by-line instructions, and then it made sense! The instructions referred back to the details, so it was really straightforward. Made a second little jacked and improved on the first, no stopping me now!
