Excellent book but cut the cuteness
This book seeks to make accessible to laypersons, one of the hottest topics in soil health today—rhizophagy. The idea that roots “eat” bacteria, strip them of nutrients, and spit them out, where the bacteria reload and go through the process again, is mind-blowing, but now proven fact. There is a lot of microbiology and chemistry involved, and the author makes an admirable, though not 100% successful, attempt to translate it into lay terms for his readers. I understand oxidation-reduction reactions conceptually, but not practically, after reading about them in this book, for instance. Two criticisms. First, as a 40+ year wordsmith, I firmly believe that 99% of anything said in parentheses is better said as a sentence without them. The author has an annoying habit of using frequent parenthetical phrases, which is made worse by the fact some of them are self-referential and others are designed to be “cute”—but fail. The book would have been better without them. Whatever purpose they were designed to serve isn’t worth it. Second, there are a number of photos with wholly inadequate captions and no superimposed arrows. For example, a photo of numerous cellular structures, and a caption that references only one, with no arrow to indicate WHiCH one. Otherwise, a valuable beginner’s introduction to this vitally important topic.
