I have been using this steel for a few months now and I am very happy with the quality of the tool. My old steel has gotten worn out and needed a replacement. This steel feels plenty hard and does a great job at freshening my kitchen knives. I use it every time I pull a knife from the block. I may be just imagining it but my knives seem to be getting better edges as I use them between sharpening, rather than more worn.
