Filled with inspiring stories and photographs, this heartfelt tribute to the pit bull celebrates one of America’s most popular yet misunderstood dogs. Perhaps more than any other breed, the pit bull has been dogged by negative stereotypes. In truth, pit bulls are innately wonderful family pets, as capable of love and good deeds as any other type of dog. Setting the record straight, Ken Foster sings the praises of pit bulls in I’m a Good Dog , a gorgeously illustrated, tenderly written tribute to this most misunderstood of canines. Founder of the Sula Foundation, which promotes responsible pit bull ownership in New Orleans, and the author of two acclaimed books about abandoned dogs, Foster has made it his mission to bring overlooked canines into the limelight. I’m a Good Dog traces the fascinating history of this particularly maligned breed. A century ago, the pit bull was considered a family dog, featured in family photos and trusted as loving companions for children. More recently, pit bulls have been portrayed by the media as stereotypes of everything they are not. Foster shatters that reputation through moving profiles of pit bulls that serve as therapy dogs, athletic heroes, search-and-rescue dogs, and educators, not to mention as loving pets. Foster also profiles many pit bull lovers, from Helen Keller and Dr. Seuss to actor Todd Cerveris, who took his pit bull on tour with him for the musical Spring Awakening . Proving that there’s much to love and nothing to fear, I’m a Good Dog restores the pit bull to its rightful place as friend, family member, athlete and entertainer. Review: They ARE Good Dogs! - This is a beautiful book, full of gorgeous pictures and really lovely words - done in a coffee-table style. It's easy to get through in one sitting, and you will go back time and time again to look at those beautiful bullies. Beside its obvious message that pit bulls are sweet, lovable couch potatoes, what really stood out for me is the riotous variety of colors that pit bulls come in - truly every color under the sun. I have two pits, Alice and Cooper, both rescued. Cooper is a beautiful black and white, traditional-looking pit bull, 3 years of age, adopted at age 1 from Best Friends Animal Sanctuary. The worst thing he has ever done is steal shoes (unfortunately it seems to be a crime of which he is completely unrepentant and which he apparently intends to continue committing), and Alice is an almost-white pit-mix with one big brown spot around her right eye. She's about a year and a half old and was adopted 6 months ago from our local shelter, looking like a skeleton. She has fattened up nicely, and is a total marshmallow full of love. Her only crime is excess kisses. (Incidentally, when I adopted her from the shelter, it was FULL of pit bulls, as most of them are.) Anyone who loves pit bulls like I do, will love this book. It would make a great gift. If you are familiar with Mr. Foster's other books, "The Dogs Who Found Me" and "Dogs I Have Met", you already know of his love for dogs and particularly pit bulls. Highly recommended. Review: A must read for any dog lover - I read this in a couple of hours. It is a simple and thoughtful book about some of the facts regarding the most misunderstood and loved dog. I bought this for my neighbor who adopted a pitbull type dog and didn't realize it until several people pointed it out. Because of the misinformation toward these sweet dogs, I can tell she is hesitant to let her just act like a dog. Like any dog (or human), setting prejudices against her will not let her excel toward her best self. The sweet dog is afraid of everything and seems extremely depressed. She only lights up when she sees or interacts with another animal, including cats. She was severely abused in her previous situation and is lucky she found her current family who want to sincerely help her. I think they just can't get past the ignorant people who spew total bs about the "breed". I am hoping my neighbor will read this book and realize her new dog is just a dog, only better. Pitbull type dogs are the most incredibly lovable dogs I have ever known. They are the original American dog and are so kind. It is a shame that the media and human ignorance has made them into anything less than the perfect family dog, and the perfect dog period. If you are lucky enough to have a pitty in your family, you know what I mean. To those who don't yet...what are you waiting for? You won't be able to believe how you could love someone so much. Just please be a good human to them. As with any dog, be responsible and protect them. Be a positive voice for them and help bring the public perception back to the way it used to be.

SHOULD HAVE 10 STARS!
My current best companion is a pit bull, as were the 3 dogs I had before her. I absolutely loved this book! The pictures are beautiful and the writing is exceptional (also the quality of the physical book itself is exceptional for a paperback). A great book to have on your coffee table so visitors will pick it up and be drawn into it! It is filled with accurate information and engaging, compassionate (& sometimes funny!) experiences of the author and others who have known and loved pit bulls. I highly recommend it (& if you know someone who still believes the negative myths about pitties, encourage them to read this). Five-plus stars!

Beautiful and heartwarming
I gifted myself this book for Christmas and finished it as soon as it arrived. It’s beautiful, inspiring, emotional, and heartwarming. The author did an amazing job telling the history of this beloved breed and talked about the misjudgments and discrimination that they face. As a Pittie lover and Pittie mom, I know the feelings of seeing people cross the street out of fear and prejudice for my dog. This is a great book to educate and advocate for this wonderful breed and to show the world how truly magnificent and loving they are.

Gorgeous photos, great stories.
This was a great book for pit bull lovers, but also talks about what it means to love dogs of all breeds. There are touching profiles of rescues, failed fosters, canine helpers/workers, and dogs through history. The book is a quick read but I can see myself going back to it in the future just to share some of the stories and photos with friends. I loved that the author addressed BSL. Probably my only issue with the book was that I got the impression that the author was saying that things are turning around for bully breeds, and while I do feel that is partially true, it is my opinion that there is still so far to go that it seems a little to early to make that claim. However, the whole book has an encouraging and thoughtful tone of hope, so it really does align with that spirit. I also wish that the call out story pages would have come at a logical place in the reading order rather than in the middle of another story, but that was also a minor issue. This is a lovely book, and my doggies probably thought so too because they snuggled up next to me while I read it. My own pit pup was adopted from the humane society where they had labeled him a "shepherd mix" so he could be adopted in our area that has BSL and breed bans in place (the author actually mentions this practice of identifying a pit mix as a lab or shepherd mix to save more lives and allow placements). I will admit that before owning my dog, I actually worried about what I had heard about owning a pit bull, but my dog taught me that none of thise stereotypes were true. My pit is a big love who thinks he is a lapdog, and he loves my other two dogs and even the stray cats! He is loyal, playful, and a total bed hog. This book definetely represented what I feel about my dog, and how I wish others would view him.

Must read - especially if you LOVE pitties!
I just recently adopted my first pit-bull, Lily, from a rescue organization (she is the second dog I've adopted). I did a lot of research on the breed before I adopted her and knew that many would consider my choice in breed a mistake. Well, I say who cares! Lily truly is the best dog ever. She is extremely affectionate, very friendly and loves everyone she meets. So when I ran across the book, I knew I needed to buy it. Not because I needed convincing on the breed or on the rewards of adopting a resuce/shelter dog but because I wanted to be able to tell others about how wonderful the breed is, and so I'm always looking for more information to support my cause. And this is a great book for it! It's an easy read and goes into enough detail in the stories that you will be able to remember them and share them with everyone you want to about how pit-bulls truly are an amazing breed. The pictures in the book are absolutely beautiful! (My Lily looks exactly like the pit-bull on the Sports Illustrated cover that is shown in the book). Ken does an excellent job of disproving all of the myths about the breed and the book is very touching! If you love pits like I do, get this book for you, for your friends and anyone else you can think of! Let's do what we can to show how wonderful this breed truly is!!!

I orderd 8 books....
....to give to my friends and one for myself. Make no mistake, I love me some pit bull! I rescued one a year ago and have done extensive research on the breed. They are an incredibly loving breed and I can't imaginine my life without a pit with me ever again. And I want everybody to understand this highly misunderstood breed that is so abused..... Saying that, while this paticular book does expound on the positive aspects of the pittie - and there are so many! - it downplays some realities to a fault. According to this book all pits are "good" and accept other dogs. All pits have completely lost their innate passion to fight other dogs - UNTRUE!!!!!!! This book does a dis-service in that aspect. Many pits are subdued, love kittens and baby ducks and wouldn't hurt a flea. But MOST will act out towards other dogs. NEVER, EVER, EVER leave a pit alone with another dog. Respect this breed! Know what you have! After several centuries of being bred to fight other dogs (thanks to idiot humans), these dogs are not going to change. In the words of comic Chris Rock referring to the Vegas tiger attacking Sigfield of Sigfield and Roy - "People say that tiger went crazy! Huh! That tiger went TIGER"! Don't expect a pit not to be a pit - and pits will go after other dogs without being trained otherwise....pits go after humans then something is gravely WRONG....the breeding or raising has gone bad. Pits do not have jaws that lock. They do not. However, they can snap your neck, know that. Raise them properly. Monitor them, For God's sake, don't breed the most overbred dog there is - but if you slefishly must - be responible about it and use a good blood line and follow up on the pups. I love the fact this book does not demonize these sweet babies. This book also shows the true brilliance and love this breed does possess. I just think this book shows this breed with no fault - and with that is fault. Know the breed. Respect and care for accordingly. As a first time pit owner, I can say my life has never been so graced and full of love before I found this incredible breed

Beautiful and Finally Filled with some Hope!
This book too my breath away, and made my heart ache while at the same time indicating that perhaps some hope is rising from the ashes for these truly wonderful, loyal, loving companion animals. The photos are stunning, it is worthy of a place on your coffee table. There are factual stories about Breed Specific Legislation and the level of efforts made to fight these unjust laws. There are also heartwarming stories of some of these dogs who have come back from such horrible situations to become therapy dogs, beloved family pets, and service dogs. Not only are they strong, faithful, beautiful and athletic; but they are also brave and resilient enough to find their way back from the depths of hell to be what they are meant to be. Buy it, read it, cherish it. Adopt a bully breed and complete your life! Help restore these amazing animals back to their right position as ambassadors of what a family pet can and should be.

Educational
I bought this book as i have a dog which has the same temperament and looks she is a cross staff, and also because they are nice dogs and have a bad press because of some owners who take advantage of their good nature and their keenness to please their owners, this book shows the truth about this breed of dog!!

I was the owner of a beautiful intelligent Staffordshire Terrier who, sadly, has since died. I learned first hand what a remarkable breed this is. The author obviously feels as I do. The book is a fitting tribute to a noble breed.
